April’s string of exciting and fun tournaments continues this week in New Orleans. We’re in the Big Easy for one of the most unique events in the sport. Let’s dive into some Zurich Classic History and check out it’s past winners.
Zurich Classic History
Golf in New Orleans dates back to as early as 1931 and the city has had an annual event since 1958. Before taking on it’s first corporate sponsor, the event was called The New Orleans Invitational.
This changed in 1975 when it took on it’s first major sponsor thus springboarding the tournament to new heights. This and the future resulting sponsorships helped bring this event onto national television and make it a fixture on the PGA schedule.
2005 was the first year in which Zurich Insurance was the title sponsor. This also marked the beginning of the tournament being hosted at TPC Louisiana.
Still under the sponsorship of Zurich, the tournament announced a new two-player team format in the fall of 2016. Marking the first time since 1981 that a PGA Tour would have a team event on the schedule.
