Where is the Kentucky Derby?
The Derby is raced at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The race was first run back in 1875. The current purse is $5 million and the event includes its sibling race, the Kentucky Oaks which is raced on the Friday before Saturday’s big race.
Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. organized the Kentucky Derby after visiting Epsom in Surrey where there had been a Derby running annually since 1780. He returned to America and organized the Louisville Jockey Club to raise money for the track that became known as Churchill Downs. The name became official in 1937.
Over 100,000 people are usually in attendance while millions of people from around the world bet with online sportsbooks and watch the event. Traditions surround the event like the drinking of mint juleps, wearing ridiculous hats, and more.
