Derek Carr Will Be Busy in Indy, Bills DC Leslie Frazier Stepping Away, and Other NFL Bullets

I’m feeling under the weather today, so I’m off to a late start after taking an “I hope I feel better when I wake up” nap this morning. Spoiler: It didn’t work all that well. Nevertheless, let’s get into it. Derek Carr will be a busy man in Indianapolis this week.

  • According to a report by The Athletic, Carr is set to meet with the Jets, Saints, and Panthers this week in Indianapolis. Carr is taking advantage of all the NFL teams being in Indy for the Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium this week.
  • We know that Carr has already met with the Saints and Jets previously. Carr met with the Saints before his release from the Raiders. The Raiders and Saints had agreed to the framework of a trade for Carr, but Carr rejected the trade, leading to his release earlier this month.
  • Carr spent the weekend in New York with the Jets recently and by all indications, the meeting went very well.
  • Derek Carr, a four-time Pro Bowler, spent nine seasons with the Raiders, starting 142 games and finishing with 35,222 yards, 217 touchdowns, and 99 interceptions with a 64.6 completion percentage. A decision on where Carr will play next season should come in the next two weeks before the new league year starts and free agency opens.
  • Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is taking a year off of coaching, the team announced Tuesday.
  • The Bills also announced the hiring of Al Holcomb as a senior defensive assistant Tuesday. He was with the Panthers for two seasons as interim defensive coordinator and assistant head coach.
  • Buffalo did not give a reason for Frazier’s decision but said he “plans to return for the 2024 season.” Frazier joined the Bills in 2017 after stints with numerous other teams around the NFL. Frazier has spent time with the Ravens, Buccaneers, Vikings, Colts, Bengals and Eagles.
  • Under Frazier, Buffalo has allowed an average of 20 points per game (third in the NFL), 315 total yards per game (first), 202 passing yards per game (first), 107 passing touchdowns (first), and 99 interceptions (second) and 158 takeaways (second), per the team.
  • The Rams have given Bobby Wagner permission to speak with other teams rather than waiting for free agency to begin. After a meeting with the Rams last week, the two sides agreed to mutually part ways. Wagner signed a five-year, $50 million contract with the Los Angeles Rams last April. Wagner’s deal with the Rams included $20 million in guaranteed money, $10 million of which was guaranteed at signing.
  • Could a reunion in Seattle be in order? The Seahawks need help at inside linebacker with Jordyn Brooks recovering from ACL surgery he underwent on January 19, and Cody Barton set to become a free agent. Wagner spent 10 seasons with the Seahawks before signing with the Rams. Wagner wants to win now, and Seattle is in a pretty good position to do so.
  • The New York Giants plan to release Kenny Golladay when free agency opens on March 15. Golladay, 29, was set to count $21.4 million against the cap. However, he still is guaranteed $4.5 million from the Giants this season. By waiting until March 15, the Giants will save $6.7 million against their salary cap.
  • Wagner and Golladay will be joined on the open market by Carson Wentz. Wentz will play for his fourth team in as many seasons in 2023 after being released by the Commanders. After playing his first five seasons in Philadelphia, Wentz has made stops in Indianapolis and Washington the past two seasons.
  • Wentz started seven games for the Commanders in 2022. The veteran signal callers completed 62 percent of his passes and amassed 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
