Cubs Minor League Daily: More All-Star Action

kane county cougarsOn Tuesday it was the Midwest League reveling in the All-Star festivities, and once again Cub prospects represented themselves well.

Bijan Rademacher and Rock Shoulders both made an appearance in the game, but it was starting DH Dan Vogelbach who doubled for the West Division’s only extra base hit. Vogelbach finished his day 2 for 2 with a double and a walk.

On the mound, Tayler Scott and Nathan Dorris both pitched briefly but effectively in relief. Neither factored into the decision.

If you missed the game but are a subscriber to MILB.TV, you should be able to catch the replay. This was one of the very few times you will be able to see any players from this team play in any capacity this season unless you visit the ballpark in person, so it might be well worth taking advantage of.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – The Cubs won easily, 7-0.
Tennessee – The Smokies had the day off.
Daytona – The Cubs overcame three errors by pounding out 17 hits, including two grand slams, in this 14-8 slugfest win.
Kane County – Kane County was also off. They resume from their All-Star break on Thursday.
Boise – The Hawk’s offense never got going in this game. They lost 9-2.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Nick Struck started the shutout and lasted 6.2 innings. He allowed 3 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 3.
  • [Iowa] Casey Coleman put three on base, but he did successfully record four scoreless outs in relief of Struck. Eduardo Sanchez completed the shutout by fanning two in the ninth. [Brett: Hmm. I guess Sanchez must have cleared waivers. Sweet.]
  • [Iowa] Second baseman Logan Watkins had a pretty good game. He reached three times on two singles and a walk, and also stole his sixth base of the season.
  • [Iowa] The Iowa outfield also put up some good numbers. Brian Bogusevic finished 2 for 3 with a walk, Dave Sappelt (batting cleanup) was 3 for 5 with a double, and Brent Lillibridge finished 1 for 2 with two walks.
  • [Daytona] Let’s start with the big blows. Tim Saunders highlighted his 3 for 5 day a grand slam. It was just his second home run of the year. Saunders also doubled.
  • [Daytona] Javier Baez had just the one hit, but it was his 14th home run. And it was also a grand slam.
  • [Daytona] John Andreoli reached base five times on three hits and two walks. Zeke DeVoss and Dustin Geiger also had multi-hit games.
  • [Daytona] On a day when there were more than enough to hits and runs to go around, Yao-Lin Wang tossed two scoreless frames and struck out two in the process.
  • [Daytona] The bad news: Daytona pitchers gave up 7 walks and only struck out 3. The good news: Daytona hitters earned 6 walks and only struck out 4 times.
  • [Boise] Trey Lang struck out 4 in 5 innings, but he also allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits.
  • [Boise] Mark down two more singles and a walk for Shawon Dunston.
  • [Boise] David Bote hit his first home run of the season in the eighth. A double by Jose Dore was the only other extra base hit.
  • Other News

  • As nice as the Iowa win is, keep in mind that it came against Nashville. The Sounds are almost historically bad this year. For example, despite being a Pacific Coast League team the Sounds have just two players in their starting lineup hitting over .260. The Cubs have six.
  • How in the world does Logan Watkins have just six stolen bases? His eight caught steals are part of the explanation, but that still rings hollow. He had 28 steals in 35 attempts last season, and 21 steals in 26 attempts the year before. His relative reluctance to run this year is, on the surface anyway, a little strange.
