No QB Controversy (Yet), New WR Coach on Kevin White, Confidence In Shaheen, and Other Bullets

Today marks the second day of the Chicago Bears’ rookie mini-camp weekend, but it also represents one last shopping day before Mother’s Day. So consider this fair warning. Do something nice for the mother(s) in your life this weekend.

With that out of the way, onward with today’s Bullets.

  • The Bears weren’t going to fall into a quarterback controversy on the first day of mini-camp, but one could be looming starting as early as this summer. Over at Pro Football Weekly, Hub Arkush wants to believe there is no controversy brewing at the position even though the early evidence points to the contrary. The Plan is for Mike Glennon to start and for first-round pick Mitch Trubisky to learn as an understudy behind Glennon and Mark Sanchez. But even the best laid plans can be thwarted at a moment’s notice. And if the Bears have two capable quarterbacks, then they’ll be in a better spot than they were in recent years and in good position moving forward.
  • For what it’s worth, Ian Rapoport reports that Glennon “is definitely the starter” in 2017, adding that it doesn’t look like an open competition will come around this summer.
  • Whether it’s minor mechanical things such as taking snaps under center, communicating with new coaches and teammates, and learning how to handle certain situations, Trubisky has much to learn about being a quarterback at the professional level. Then again, we have much to learn about Trubisky, too. Dan Pompei offers up his first thoughts on the start of the Trubisky era over at The Athletic with an eye on the educational process he will go through as camp gets underway.
  • Also at PFW, Kevin Fishbain catches up with new wide receivers coach Zach Azzani and offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains who have had their eyes on Kevin White. It might feel like White is a rookie because he has missed so much time due to injuries, but the Bears will be looking for something of a breakout year for the former top-10 pick. Both Azzani and Loggains lauded White for his work ethic as he tried to shake off the bust label some have already applied to his professional career. “He’s a high character guy. He’s going to be the first guy in the building, the last guy to leave,” Azzanni told PFW. “He doesn’t like things written about him like is he a bust or all that. He puts all that away, says ‘I’m going to work really hard and prove everyone wrong. How I can do that is by being here every day and being a really hard worker.'”
  • If there is one thing everyone is on the same page about, it’s that there is a confident vibe about Adam Shaheen’s upside. The 6-foot-6, 278-pound tight end opens eyes with his size and athleticism, and head coach John Fox and his rookie quarterback share confidence in Shaheen’s skill set and athleticism translating from Division II football to the NFL.
  • In case you missed it: Fox, Loggains, and Trubisky – The Bears’ Big Three – spoke on Friday. Here are some expanded thoughts from Fox:
  • As someone who enjoyed watching Denard Robinson slash through defenses while at Michigan, I’m intrigued by the idea of him working his way through the NFL as a running back. However, this is not a positive sign:
