Hooray? I mean, right? Like I mentioned in the Series Preview earlier today, if there was ever a time to root against the Cubs it’s this weekend against the Royals. With today’s loss, for example, the Cubs have moved ahead of Kansas City in the reverse standings. Chicago is now tied for the 6th pick in the draft (only 2.0 games out of a top-5 pick!). So in a sense, rooting against our favorite team this weekend is like rooting FOR them in the long-run.
And, hey, it’s not like Justin Steele, Adbert Alzolay, or Keegan Thompson was on the mound this afternoon. It was Zach Davies. And he allowed FOUR (4) home runs. Luckily, they were all solo shots, but my god, man.
They only thing that really brought me joy today was the hilarity and chaos of the unknown Cubs score. If you missed it, check the post out. In short, the Cubs had a 3-0 lead turn into a 2-1 lead (yes, you read that correctly) in a matter of minutes. I felt particularly bad for Cubs Broadcast Boog Sciambi, who was just doing his best to voice a long-time fan concern/plea: LET THE DANG UMPS EXPLAIN CALLS OVER A MICROPHONE.
And that was pretty much it. Ian Happ reached base twice, Patrick Wisdom hit a homer, but nobody had more than one hit, Matt Duffy’s hit streak came to an end at 10 games, the Cubs struck out 12 times, and another loss was tallied.
