The Horsted Game, Foles Showcase, Vanilla Fields, Takeaway Dunks, and Other Bears Bullets

The first of my three fantasy football drafts begins at 1 p.m. CT. How much should I spend on Justin Fields?

•   Better yet. How much of my auction budget do I spend on Jesper Horsted?

•   That type of Preseason Week 3 performance is the stuff that will get you in the Remember a Camp Guy? Hall of Fame. He caught five passes for 104 yards, and scored three touchdowns. But it’s not just the numbers that should catch your eye. Horsted made difficult contested catches on each of his scores. That one-handed snag was a doozy, but how about navigating all that traffic in a tight space to haul in that Justin Fields throw? You want to stand out on tape, *THAT* is how you do it.

•   If Horsted makes it onto the roster, he should send a thank you card to Nick Foles. QB3 was ballin’ on Saturday, completing 10 of 13 passes for 142 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, and a 151.3 passer rating. It’s arguably the best Foles has looked while as a member of the Bears. Which, on the one hand, is kinda sad if you really think about it. But on the other hand, Foles’ excellence in Preseason Week 3 might’ve thrown some dudes into roster spots. And if that ultimately helps the Bears move Foles for a future Day 3 pick, then it’s all good.

•   I think Justin Fields is gonna make the team, you guys:

•   Ah, yes! The other quarterback to sling it on Saturday was looking fine. Fields went 7/10, 54 yards, 1 TD, and a 116.3 passer rating. It was a vanilla outing for Fields, but I feel as if it was by design. There was no need to get fancy. I’m glad the Bears unleashed a cromulent 2-minute drill for him to operate in, and the result was everything you would’ve wanted. It was a 6-play, 78-yard drive that took 55 seconds that featured the stuff you’d like to see out of an end-of-half drive. Fields scrambled, completed passes to safety valves, and even threw to a DPI that led to a first down. But that throw to Horsted had Bears Twitter on one.

•   That the Bears clocked just 8 minutes and 30 seconds of offensive time of possession in the first half bothers me. The combination of bland play calling and the defense’s inability to get off the field conspired against getting an extended look at Fields. Maybe that was part of the plan? After all, the Titans announcers were apparently alluding to Matt Nagy wanting Fields to look good, but not too good. *puts on tinfoil hat*

•   I’ve spent a lot of time on this Sunday morning thinking about this tweet:

•   Before the game, Bears Director of Player Personnel Josh Lucas told Lou Canellis on FOX-32’s pregame show that there are 4-6 roster spots that could have been decided by someone’s play in Saturday’s game. I wonder what that number looks like today. Did Joel Iyiegbuniwe or Josh Woods do enough to take home a reserve ILB spot? Will Riley Ridley’s special teams efforts help him earn one of the final receiver spots? Is anyone in the secondary deserving of a role among the depths? Saturday’s game was big for a great many players. We’ll see how it all shakes out by 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday.

•   Sometimes, it’s all about being at the right place at the right time:

•   Here’s to the Turnover Bucket getting a workout in 2021:

•   Meanwhile, I still have concerns about the DBs:

•   I’ll set the over/under on passes thrown targeting Jaylon Johnson at 0.5 in Week 1. And if the OVER hits, then the Rams are making a terrible, nonsensical mistake.

•   Matt Barkley (7/15, 126 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT, 48.2 rating) didn’t fare as well in his revenge game against the Bears as Mitchell Trubisky did in his.

•   A sign of a good preseason game: I wasn’t yelling at the TV about blown special teams coverages. The Bears still have room to grow in that area, but Saturday’s efforts were a step in the right direction.

•   Is this a good place to discuss how the Packers went winless in the preseason? Or that Jordan Love put up a 69.0 passer rating yesterday? Asking for a friend.

•   Patrick Wisdom is on a heater:

•   Finally, the Bulls are getting younger and more athletic:
