Even Nickelback Couldn’t Stop the Angels’ Losing Streak

When the Los Angeles Angels losing streak hit 12 games, they opted for a change in the dugout, firing Manager Joe Maddon. When it hit 13 games, they turned to … Nickelback? The Halos were wondering, “how the hell did we wind up like this?”* on Wednesday night when they played host to the Boston Red Sox, and the entire lineup decided to walk up to a Nickelback jam.

*That’s a Nickelback joke for the uncultured among you.

If you’ve spent any time around the game of baseball, you know that superstitions rule the day, so while I’m not sure where this idea came from, I love the concept. The only problem is that it didn’t work. In fact, it might have hurt the Angels’ offense as they failed to score a single run against the Red Sox as Nathan Eovaldi danced his way around six Angels base hits in six innings of work for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox got the one run they needed when Angels reliever Jimmy Hergert gave up a two-out RBI double to Bobby Dalbec in the top of the sixth inning. The Nickelback plan didn’t work, and the Halos losing streak has reached 14.

The Angels will be looking for a new artist to walk up to the plate with tonight when they wrap up their four-game series with the Red Sox. But for now, it’s gotta feel ” like the bottom of the ninth, and I’m never gonna win,” in the Angels clubhouse.
