Holy Crap Today Was Crazy and Other Emergency Recap Bullets

confused computerThe last 24 hours have been the most active in the Chicago Cubs’ world than I can remember since the Trade Deadline last year. Maybe the Winter Meetings before this season. But it sure doesn’t feel like it.

As a courtesy to any of you who may have missed anything – and would prefer not to – here’s a recap of everything that’s gone down …

  • Gearing up for the opening of the 2013-14 international signing period today, which was also a pretext to talk about Chicago Cubs prospects, I chatted with Baseball Prospectus’s Jason Parks yesterday, and wrote about it late last night for anyone who missed it.
  • And with the opening of that international signing period, the Cubs pounced quickly, signing top Venezuelan prospect Gleyber Torres, Dominican pitching prospect Jefferson Mejia, and Colombian pitching prospect Erling Moreno.
  • But that was just the appetizer for the big move of the day, which saw the Cubs trade Scott Feldman and Steve Clevenger to the Orioles for pitchers Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop, as well as some extra international pool money to help with those signings above (and top prospect Eloy Jimenez, who hasn’t yet signed).
  • The Cubs didn’t stop there. They also completed the Carlos Marmol Dodgers trade, which was originally reported as close last night, and which netted the Cubs DFA’d reliever Matt Guierrer and about $500,000 in savings. It also cost the Cubs about $210,000 in international pool money.
  • Speaking of international pool money, the Cubs picked up almost $800,000 in it from the Astros in exchange for second base prospect Ronald Torreyes. All told on the day, the Cubs added nearly $1 million in extra international spending money.
  • Then Sahadev Sharma and I spoke with Keith Law – who broke the news of the Feldman deal – about that trade, about the value of international pool dollars, about Matt Garza’s trade value, about the Cubs’ draft approach, and about a number of Cubs prospects.
  • The Cubs made a number of roster moves in addition to/related to the trades of the day, and the long list of roster moves is summed up here.
  • I also wrote an update about the Make-A-Wish fundraiser for the BN Blogathon, which is going excellently thanks to your support. That update was published eight minutes before the Feldman trade broke, so nobody read it. Maybe you could read it now, and then consider donating to help make some Cubs wishes come true for young fans.
