Quarterback Mitch Trubisky Is Now Taking Second-Team Snaps At OTAs

With Mark Sanchez sidelined due to a knee injury suffered during last weeks OTAs, rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky took a step up on the Chicago Bears’ depth chart:

Trubisky confirmed he was taking second-team reps on Tuesday, which is positive news for his overall development. And over at the Chicago Tribune, Dan Wiederer offers up highlights of what the No. 2 overall pick had to say to the media after practice.

The Bears have three new quarterbacks currently on the roster, which can make things difficult for all involved parties. Mike Glennon needs the biggest share of snaps to get him comfortable enough in a new offense to have him ready to be the starter in Week 1. Sanchez needs a chunk of snaps because, in theory, he needs to be ready to slide into the starter’s role in a pinch if anything was to happen to Glennon during the regular season. Meanwhile, Trubisky needs reps, despite being the third quarterback on the depth chart, because he is the future of the franchise at the position and has only started 13 games since graduating high school. And with Sanchez out of action until July, Trubisky should have ample opportunity to get some additional learning experience behind Glennon.

You can make an argument that Trubisky’s development is the most important thing that could come out of training camp for the long-term health of the Bears’ organization. It’s unfortunate that Trubisky’s opportunity at OTAs comes because of an injury, but here’s hoping he can make the most of his extra chances and get himself acclimated to life as a professional signal caller.
