Trubisky with the Second Team, Glennon Developing Chemistry, Sitton Switching Sides, and Other Bullets

Inclimate weather has moved Bears practice indoors, but @ChicagoBears has you covered with some weather-friendly highlights:

  • Head coach John Fox tried to warn folks to not get carried away upon seeing rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky practicing with the second-team unit, but good luck with that. Bob LeGere of the Daily Herald writes that Trubisky took reps with the second team in practice on Wednesday, which allowed him to gain some familiarity with teammates he might not be practicing with while taking snaps with the third team. Because of the Bears’ unique quarterback situation, not only is getting everyone a fair amount of reps an issue, but prioritizing the present and future is also a challenge offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains must deal with this summer. Still, it’s encouraging that Trubisky is getting that kind of chance.
  • While Trubisky attempts to move his way up the depth chart, starting quarterback Mike Glennon is developing chemistry with Cameron Meredith, writes ESPN Chicago’s Jeff Dickerson. The idea of the new starting quarterback and the team’s top receiver from last year getting on the same page felt inevitable, but was no sure thing because of the variables involved. Glennon comes in with a clean slate, while trying to learn a playbook and get a feel for his teammates. Meredith is young with some upside, but is still trying to establish himself after a breakout season. But whether you’re interested in this budding connection as a Bears fan or a fantasy football player, this is a positive sign.
  • We’ll see if Glennon, Trubisky, or any quarterback for that matter, can build a bond with Kevin White, who had a quality afternoon at practice on Wednesday. But as Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times writes, some of it was overshadowed by the talk of reminiscing of the good ol’ days of college. White has been mostly healthy in 2017, but things haven’t been all that great for the first player selected in the Ryan Pace era. White missed practice time at OTAs after being praised by Glennon for a solid showing at practice, and its not as if his coach helped matters with his explanation considering White was healthy and a full participant 10 days prior to being sat out.
  • If Glennon finds time to connect with Meredith, White, or any receivers in the mix, one of the reasons will be guard Josh Sitton, who is one of the players tasked with protecting the quarterback. As expected, Sitton returned to the practice field to make his training camp debut after missing time while on paternity leave. Sitton was one of two players who represented the Bears in the Pro Bowl, and if he’s going to make it again, he’ll be doing it at a different position. The veteran offensive lineman, who was a Pro Bowl right guard for the Packers, talked about some of the small adjustments he’ll need to make when switching sides with Patrick Finley of the Sun-Times.
  • Staying along the offensive line, Kyle Long will host his inaugural women’s football clinic, where women (ages 21 and up) will “learn football basics in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.”
  • Also at camp: the Bears had a special guest with a cameo made by referee Walt Anderson. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune has an image of Anderson at work.
  • I did not expect Josh Bellamy’s name to be listed here among the leaders of deep pass target percentage:
  • Another prove-it year for Alshon Jeffery isn’t off to a great start at Eagles camp. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports the former Bears receiver has missed three straight practices due to a shoulder injury. Jeffery injured his shoulder on Saturday, returned to practice on Sunday, but has been sidelined since. Jeffery has been slowed by injuries throughout his career, and it’s likely a main reason the Bears were hesitant to sign him to a long-term extension when they had a chance. And rather than handing him the franchise tag for a second straight season, the team part ways with its former Pro Bowl receiver and allowed him to walk away in free agency.
  • Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill left practice Thursday as it appeared his left knee buckled while he scrambled during a non-contact drill. If you’ll recall, Tannehill missed the last four games of the season (including a playoff loss to the Steelers) after he sprained ligaments in the same knee late in the season. The Dolphins went 10-6 in Adam Gase’s first year with the team, marking the franchise’s first winning season since 2008.
  • It will be interesting to see where Miami goes for quarterback help if necessary. For what it’s worth, Gase came to Jay Cutler’s defense in the offseason, and you can’t help but wonder if Cutler would step out of the broadcast booth before he even steps in it for another shot to play quarterback.
  • Packers GM Ted Thompson sees the benefit of a new rule implemented for this season. Unlike previous years that featured multiple cut-down dates leading up to the start of the season, there will only be one final cut after the four games of the preseason are played. For evaluation purposes, Thompson sees this development as a positive.
