No Foolin’, Fields on Top, Dominant OL Prospects, and Other Bears Bullets

I couldn’t have scripted a better setlist than what John Mayer put on Friday at United Center.

  • It’s bold … and beautiful:

  • At media day before his MVP season, Bulls guard Derrick Rose asked “why can’t I win MVP?” and then went out and did it. So … why can’t Justin Fields be the NFC’s best QB next year? Who would’ve had Jalen Hurts in that top 5 at this time last year? Or would you’ve even had Derek Carr in the NFC?
  • All things considered, it is a wide-open field here in the NFC. There is a realistic shot for Fields to land comfortably in the top 5. And if that is how the cookie crumbles, he’ll be in line for quite the payday.
  • What would Fields even need to do to win MVP? I’d say 3,200+ pass yards, 1,000+ rushing yards, 30+ total touchdowns (passing + rushing) gets him in the conversation. Especially if the Bears can pull off one of those “worst to first” types of seasons. I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself. But I do want to dream about Fields’s limitless potential ahead of him. This is a chapter in a book that is yet to be written. Fields will get to author this chapter. And I’m on the edge of my seat.
  • If this is the case, the Bears should finagle their way into drafting O’Cyrus Torrence:
  • As a reminder, the Bears’ coaches were at the Senior Bowl. This includes Offensive Line Coach Chris Morgan. Torrence was there, too. I imagine the Bears took a good look at the Florida standout while they were at the Senior Bowl.
  • I wish Olu Fashanu would’ve entered this draft because he probably would’ve been the perfect pick when the Bears go on the clock at No. 9:
  • Depending on how things go this year, maybe Fashanu will be on the Bears’ wish list in the 2024 NFL Draft. After all, they will have the Carolina Panthers’ first-rounder. Maybe we should keep Fashanu on our radar.
  • This is a bold stance to take:
  • Even though I think the Bears line is better now than it was at this time last year, that just isn’t good enough for me. So I’ll disagree as I keep offensive line needs at the very top of the to-do list.
  • Is former Bears receiver Dante Pettis exploring the idea of switching sports?
  • I wouldn’t be against the Bears bringing back Pettis to battle for a down-the-depth-chart receiver role. It’ll be curious to see who gets the opportunity to be that receiver who also is a key special teams contributor. Perhaps more specifically, I wonder who is returning kicks and pints next year. The hope is that Velus Jones Jr. takes off, but he has to clear up the issues he had last year before we’re comfortable with him in that role again. Maybe Travis Homer gets a shot at it?
  • One player I don’t want to see returning kicks this year is Khalil Herbert. At this point, he is too important yo the offense to risk losing on special teams. If you’ll recall, Herbert spent time on IR after suffering an injury that happened during a kick return. The Bears rushing game was fine without Herbert. However, there was an explosive aspect that was missing in Herbert’s absence.
  • Legends of the game:

  • After a well-earned day off, the Cubs and Brewers are slated to return to action this afternoon. Everything you need to know about that is here.
  • The return is coming:
  • Some pretty big NBA news:
