Draft Day is Coming, NFC North QB Prospect Watch, Crews, Warren, and Other Bears Bullets

The Chicago Cubs finished a winning road trip with a series win against the defending NL champs. Taylor Swift has a new album that drops at 11 p.m. CT. And the Chicago Bears will usher in a new quarterback era one week from today. A lot going on at the moment, to be sure. But things are going well right now.

  • Here we go! The 2024 NFL Draft is one week from today. Suddenly, I have the Barenaked Ladies song “One Week” stuck in my head. And if you are of a certain age, it might soon be rattling around in your head. Let’s get it unstuck by checking out Matt’s latest installment of the Bleacher Nation mock draft series.
  • I love it when a mock draft has a prospect I want on the Bears falling to where Chicago is set to select at No. 9. Don’t get me wrong. I’m down to clown and take a swing at a trade-up. Fortune favors the bold. But if this team can add a prospect of Rome Odunze’s caliber without moving, then I’ll be quite happy.
  • ‘Wait for my dress’: Caleb Williams is the Zoomer QB to shake up the hidebound Bears is the headline accompanying this piece at The Guardian by Andrew Lawrence. Fist bumps for the editor and/or headline writer(s) responsible for that one.
  • Jason Lieser (Sun-Times) has more on the Bears’ hiring of former Kansas City Chiefs exec Ted Crews. Fancy titles aside, it sure seems like Crews has been brought in to help the franchise take on the incoming blitz that will come with Caleb Williams’ pending arrival. Again, this counts as yet another example of the Bears modernizing their organization in a way that has me saying “better late than never.” And who better to help guide Chicago’s football team than someone who had to have a handle on the extra attention Travis Kelce was getting last year?
  • Some good reading at the Chicago Tribune via Colleen Kane, who writes about the impact of Kevin Warren in his first year as Bears president. It is too early for me to give Warren’s presidency a letter grade. However, my feelings about Year 1 of the Warren regime are mostly positive. Nothing overwhelming. Just a sense that it is nice to talk about a Bears president without feelings of angst overhead that were omnipresent whenever the previous president’s name was brought up in discussion.
  • I’m used to the Bears making befuddling decisions at quarterback. So it is kinda wild to see the Washington Commanders decision to have a quarterback prospect group date ahead of the NFL Draft. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio has more on that front.
  • The Green Bay Packers targeting a potential sleeper quarterback means we need to be aware of this franchise pulling another magic act at the position:
  • Speaking of quarterbacks, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reports the Minnesota Vikings are set to have a meeting with LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels in Baton Rouge. Maybe the QB group date results in Washington moving off Daniels and leads to the Vikings targeting the 2023 Heisman Trophy-winner instead of J.J. McCarthy. Quarterback chaos is going to be fun to follow.
  • Detroit Lions General Manager Brad Holmes is ready to send out apologies if the team trades out of the first round and it upsets some fans in the process.
  • NFL Draft fun fact via the Associated Press: The upcoming draft includes just 58 early entrants, which represents the lowest number of underclassmen with remaining eligibility to enter the draft since 2011. I suppose NIL is keeping some potential prospects in school. It’ll be interesting to follow this trend to see if it continues. What will the ultimate impact be? Perhaps we’ll get more polished prospects because of it. Stay tuned.

  • This is (and always has been) a Coby White fan account:
  • The Chicago Bulls fill me with angst, despair, and other emotions that I should probably discuss with my therapist. But last night’s Bulls game was tremendously enjoyable. If they played more games like that, I’d have tuned in more often this year.
  • A Winter Classic update from our friends at BN Blackhawks:
  • Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks had a wonderful and brutally honest assessment about his most recent performance.
