The charge towards North Carolina sports betting continues and there are more updates from the lottery commission as well as operators in the state. Here’s the latest including a new partnership between the Carolina Hurricanes and Fanatics.
Fanatics Sportsbook Partners with Carolina Hurricanes
Fanatics has struck a deal with the NHL franchise the Carolina Hurricanes helping them bring sports betting into the state. This makes Fanatics the fourth sportsbook to strike a deal with a professional sports team or facility in the state following bet365, ESPN Bet, and FanDuel. bet365 teamed up with the Charlotte Hornets, ESPN Bet is partnered with Quail Hollow Club, and FanDuel is working with the PGA Tour.
The law in North Carolina along with rules approved by the North Carolina Lottery Commission call for sportsbook operators to partner with professional teams or facilities to be able to join NC sports betting.
Rules Recently Finalized by Committee
The sports betting committee working with the North Carolina Lottery Commission recently finalized rules for sports betting which is a major step to getting online betting off the ground in 2024. Also, the committee confirmed that 14 sportsbook operators applied for sports betting licenses.
The state is allowing up to 12 regulated sportsbooks which means operators will be left out of the action based on applications.
Application Deadline Set for Dec. 27
Sports betting applications are due by December 27. The committee then has 60 days to review the applications, approve them, and give their final say. As of now, we know bet365, FanDuel, ESPN Bet, and Fanatics will likely be given a sports betting license due to getting a head start with approved professional partnerships.
Will North Carolina Sports Betting Launch in March?
There is still no official sports betting launch date for North Carolina. If we put all of the information together, the earliest the state will likely get it live online would be March. This is because of the 60-day approval period that starts on December 27 when sportsbook applications are due.
If you look 60 days past December 27, we are sitting at the end of February. North Carolina could have a launch right before March Madness. This would be similar to Massachusetts in 2023 which launched on March 10 which was a week before the March Madness Tournament. NCAA March Madness in 2024 starts on March 19th with the First Four games.
