Masters Odds, History, Picks
Spring has sprung at Augusta National, and with it, the return of a golfing spectacle unlike any other, The Masters. Once again, the fairways of Amen Corner and the legendary greens of Magnolia Lane await the world’s finest golfers, all vying for the coveted green jacket. This year’s tournament promises to be a captivating one with the lines between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf blurring. As well as Rory McIlroy still searching for a career grand slam. Buckle up, golf fans, because The Masters is set to be a thrilling ride.
Tournament History
Steeped in tradition and sporting grandeur, the Masters Tournament boasts a history as remarkable as the golfers who grace its fairways. Its origins trace back to 1933, when legendary golfer Bobby Jones, fresh off his historic Grand Slam win, partnered with businessman Clifford Roberts. Together, they envisioned Augusta National Golf Club as a haven for the game’s elite, and with it, a prestigious annual tournament. The first competition, then known as the Augusta National Invitation Tournament, teed off in 1934.
The iconic “Masters” name itself is a story in two parts. Initially, Roberts proposed this title, but Jones, known for his humility, found it a touch presumptuous. For five years, the tournament bore the more modest invitational title. However, in 1939, Jones finally relented, and the Masters Tournament, as we know it today, was officially christened. This unique blend of competitive fire and timeless tradition continues to make the Masters a one-of-a-kind event in the golfing world.
Masters Odds
As host to one of the four major events on the schedule, Augusta National always sees all of the world’s best golfers competing on its historic fairways. The Masters Odds Favorite: Scottie Scheffler
Nobody is playing as well as Scottie Scheffler ahead of the 2024 Masters Tournament. He’s finished 1st or 2nd in his last three events and failed to crack the top 6 of a leaderboard just twice all season. Scheffler is also a Green Jacket recipient already during his career having won the sport’s most prestigious event back in 2022. That is his only finish better than 10th at The Masters of his three career appearances at Augusta National.
The Masters Odds: Best Bets
Xander Schauffele Top 10 +140 (BetMGM)
A top-20 machine when playing in major tournaments (seven consecutive top-18 finishes), this might be the year when Schauffele not only contends but actually wins. He finished as the top player in my annual “Masters Trends” piece and enters Augusta National in great form with eight top-10s in his last 11 starts. – Ron Klos
Sahith Theegala To Win 60/1 (FanDuel) & Top 20 (ties in full) +145 (DraftKings)
Sahith Theegala is probably one of my favorite golfers to watch, but he rarely finds his way onto my betting card. However, that changes this week.
He’s still just 26 years old and immensely talented, but his game has lacked consistency up until his recent run. There’s a ton of upside in his game, and he’ll flash it on the greens, on approach, and off the tee, but rarely ever at the same time.
Theegala is definitely in the midst of his best run since turning pro, with four T9 or better finishes this season, three of which have come in Signature Events against the best fields on the PGA Tour. This is just his second appearance at Augusta, but I expect him to play well this week. – Ryan Noonan
Joaquin Niemann Top 20 -105 (DraftKings)
A golfer who went out of his way to play in a tournament that had OWGR points (the Australian Open) in order to help ensure himself a spot here at Augusta this year. I don’t expect him to squander the opportunity. He has the experience here, placed in the top 20 last time out, and has the tee-to-green chops to compete here with the big guns. I played him to win as well, but I think his floor is high, and love him to place in the top twenty at this price. – Andy Molitor
