Prospects Hit the Ice in Chicago, College Media Fun, Reichel is ‘Interesting,’ Hockey Canada’s Ongoing Problems, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

In case you missed the big news …

On with the rest of the bullets …

  • The Blackhawks’ prospects are in town and they’ll be on the ice at the Fifth Third Arena at noon today for the first practice of the week. Minnesota’s bringing an impressive group to town for games on Friday night and Sunday afternoon, so this will be fun to see some young players skating in real competition.
  • The Blackhawks finally dropped their roster for the prospect showcase on Tuesday evening. Four members of the 2022 draft class — including Kevin Korchinski — will be there, as will Lukas Reichel and Nolan Allan, meaning Chicago’s top pick from the last three drafts will be in action. We’ve got your complete roster here.
  • We want to know who you’re excited to watch this week. We intentionally didn’t make any of the five players with NHL experiences on their hockey cards an option, so no votes for the four names listed or Josiah Slavin. Jump over on Twitter and vote and, if it’s OTHER, let us know in the comments below!
  • Here’s the Wild roster for the games this weekend. Minnesota will travel to Chicago on Thursday.
  • Corey Pronman at The Athletic listed the most interesting prospect heading into each NHL club’s training camp. Given the lack of other options and the photo used on the story (and in the tweet below) I don’t think I’m spoiling anything when I share that Reichel is the choice in Chicago. Here’s what he had to say about Reichel:
  • Reichel will be front and center at Chicago camp after a big year in the AHL and a lot of opportunities available on their roster. He’s a well-rounded forward who plays a pro-style game and I can see him having immediate success with Chicago.

  • In the wake of the news yesterday that Jake McCabe is going to miss at least the first two months of the regular season, I would actually argue that the trio of Ian Mitchell, Alec Regula and Alex Vlasic are more “interesting” than Reichel. We know Reichel’s going to get a shot and we know he’s the best forward prospect in the system with a contract/available for Luke Richardson. But we don’t know how the organization is going to fill in the minutes on the blue line for McCabe and which youngster is going to win that spot.
  • Frank Nazar, who isn’t at the Blackhawks’ camp this week, will wear No. 91 at Michigan this season — confirmed. And those white sweaters are clean.
  • The “star of media day” is going to be a star on the ice for the Terriers this season. Good look from Drew Commesso on Tuesday!
  • Rick Westhead continues to do a great job of reporting on the sexual assault scandal rocking Hockey Canada from the 2018 World Juniors. On Tuesday afternoon he reported London police are going to interview players from that team about the events in question.
  • As a reminder, current Blackhawks Taylor Raddysh and Boris Katchouk were part of that roster. Both players’ agents have released statements on behalf of their clients and neither player has spoken about the issue. This is clearly an issue we’re going to continue watching.
  • The Dallas Stars signed their general manager, Jim Nill, to an extension. Let’s see if he can get his top forwards on the ice for a full season this year.
  • We’re not big on the whole countdown thing (unless there’s a banner going up at the United Center) but we made an obvious exception today. Remember: #retire28.
  • Finally, let’s talk about spending money in the offseason. The Blackhawks will do it someday (they’ll have to spend about $60 million in a couple years just to get to the floor), and it appears the Cubs are ready to do it soon.
