Cubs Minor League Daily: Coming To Tennessee!

tennessee smokiesOnce again I will be making a trip to Tennessee to the see the Double A Smokies in action first hand. This year the dates for those Smokies games are July 31 and August 1. While Brett is sleeping off the Blogathon, in other words, I’ll be relaxing in the wonderful mountain setting of Eastern Tennessee.

Further information will follow. For now I’m just hoping Jorge Soler is in town and healthy that weekend. Getting to see C.J. Edwards, Pierce Johnson, or Corey Black would be nice as well.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – Iowa swept a doubleheader yesterday, winning Game One by a final of 5-3, and walking off in extras in Game Two for a 7-4 win.
Tennessee – The Smokies rallied to score three times in the eighth for this 6-5 win.
Daytona – The Cubs were shutout 3-0.
Kane County – Kane County erupted for six runs in the third inning, and that was all they needed. They won 6-1.
Boise Hawks – The Hawks scored ten times in the final two frames for this 14-3 road win.
Arizona – The Cubs pulled away in the seventh and won it 6-4.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] The game winning blast in the night cap came from Brett Jackson, his 4th homer of the season. Jackson also doubled, tripled, and finished with 4 hits and a walk across the two games.
  • [Iowa] Kris Bryant doubled and finished with two hits, both in the nightcap. He walked once in Game One, and did not strike out at all. Bryant has not struck out in 3 straight games now, and in 4 of his last 5.
  • [Iowa] Javier Baez walked twice in Game Two, but was held hitless on the day. He struck out a total of 3 times. Arismendy Alcantara finished the doubleheader with 3 hits, 2 strikeouts, and 2 steals. He now has 20 stolen bases on the year.
  • [Iowa] Kyle Hendricks pitched the first 6 innings of Game One, and he gave up more hits than is usual for him: 3 runs on 8 hits and no walks. On the other hand, he also struck out 7 and once again did most of his damage on groundouts.
  • [Iowa] Armando Rivero allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in his 2 innings of relief to wrap up Game Two, but he also struck out 5.
  • [Iowa] The starting pitcher in Game Two was Zak Hermans, last seen playing for Kane County. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2 over 3.1 innings.
  • [Tennessee] Kevin Brown, the outfielder, tripled and finished 2 for 4. Charles Cutler walked and also had 2 hits.
  • [Tennessee] Elliot Soto and Jonathan Mota each doubled and finished with 3 hits apiece.
  • [Tennessee] Corey Black threw 80 pitches through his 4.2 innings on the mound, allowing no runs on 4 hits and striking out 4. Zach Cates and Frank Batista each pitched a scoreless frame to finish off the game.
  • [Daytona] Albert Almora tripled for the first time this season. That triple was the only extra base hit for Daytona.
  • [Daytona] Pin-Chieh Chen finished 2 for 3 and had the only multi-hit game.
  • [Daytona] Stephen Perakslis worked 2.1 innings of hitless relief, striking out 2. Tyler Bremer, recently promoted from Kane County, allowed 2 hits in a scoreless final frame.
  • [Kane County] Paul Blackburn pitched 6 innings of shutout baseball in this one, allowing just 4 hits and picking up 3 strikeouts.
  • [Kane County] Shawon Dunston singled twice and stole 3 bases. He now has 10 steals on the season.
  • [Kane County] The extra bases for the Cougars were supplied by Ben Carhart (his second homer) and Jeimer Candelario (a double). Kyle Schwarber finished 0 for 3 with a walk.
  • [Boise] Jesse Hodges hit season home runs number 2 and number 3 as he finished 3 for 5. Jeffrey Baez also homered (his 4th), doubled, and finished 3 for 5.
  • [Boise] Mark Zagunis tripled (his first), walked, and finished 2 for 4. He was in left field.
  • [Boise] Mark Malave (with a double), Zak Blair, and Rashad Crawford also finished with 2 hits.
  • [Boise] Tyler Ihrig pitched 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and no walks. He struck out 5.
  • [Arizona] Jorge Soler played an entire game in right field, which is what matters.
  • [Arizona] Eloy Jimenez, appearing in just his second game, also played the entire game, and finished 2 for 4 with a double.
  • [Arizona] Gleyber Torres finished 3 for 3 with a walk and 2 failed attempts at stealing.
  • [Arizona] Ricardo Marcano finished 2 for 4 with his second double of the season.

  • In case you missed it yesterday, Bleacher Nation has once again partnered with Make A Wish to bring you the Trade Deadline Blogathon. Not only does your donation to Make A Wish allow a young fan have an awesome experience during a rough time, it also allows you to cackle in amusement as Brett slowly loses his sanity live on the Internet. This is one of those rare opportunities where you can be the hero and help a great cause, and be the villain by making Brett stay up for 37 straight hours, and do both at the same time! As of midnight last night we were already over $2,000 donated. And that, like all of you, is awesome.
