Chicago Cubs Lineup: Javy’s Back! (UPDATED for Vegas Lineup)

Today, the Chicago Cubs are playing a game in Scottsdale against the Rockies, and are also playing a game in Las Vegas against the Reds. I don’t have the lineup yet for the second one, but here’s the lineup against the Rockies … and look who’s back:

  1. Jon Jay, LF
  2. Jason Heyward, CF
  3. Willson Contreras, C
  4. Javy Baez, 2B
  5. Jeimer Candelario, 3B
  6. Matt Szczur, RF
  7. Matt Dominguez, 1B
  8. Carlos Sepulveda, 2B (not my typo!)
  9. Brett Anderson, P

Fresh off starring in the World Baseball Classic, Javy Baez is back with the Chicago Cubs with a week to gear up for the regular season. It probably won’t be quite as exciting as what he did in the WBC, but, hey, you never know with Javy. He could bust something crazy out at any moment.

Brett Anderson will take some hacks today, and hopefully that’s another thing he’ll be able to do without any back issues.

Interesting that Matt Szczur starts in right field, with Jason Heyward in center field. We haven’t seen too much of Szczur in center field lately, which I doubt has much to do with his ability to handle it out there, and may simply be the product of the Cubs wanting to make sure Heyward is ready and able to swing out into center field again this year when the match-ups dictate it.

Carlos Sepulveda is 20-year-old infield prospect who held his own in full-season ball at South Bend last year, primarily playing second base. I’m not sure whether it’s he or Baez who’ll actually be playing shortstop in this one (the printed lineup has both at second base). In any case, this is a nice honor for a young prospect who will be one to watch this season. I actually heard some good things while I was in Arizona watching him in a couple back field intrasquad games.

If the other lineup comes out, I’ll pop it in here.

We’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time.

UPDATE: Here’s your Cubs lineup for the game in Las Vegas (Muskat):

  1. Kyle Schwarber, LF
  2. Kris Bryant, 1B
  3. Miguel Montero, C
  4. Albert Almora, CF
  5. Tommy La Stella, 3B
  6. Ian Happ, 2B
  7. John Andreoli, RF
  8. Kyle Hendricks, P
  9. Chesney Young, SS

Hooray for Albert Almora getting right back in there. He must have woken up feeling just fine.
