The dynamic duo of Ian Happ and Jeimer Candelario have stolen all the Iowa headlines this year, but there is another pair on that roster who may have just as much, if not more, near-term impact on the Chicago Cubs.
Eddie Butler is a formerly well regarded pitching prospect looking to revive his career with the Cubs, and Alec Mills is a nearly ready starting pitcher who came over in a trade from Kansas City. Both are off to good starts.
Butler has made three starts now, averaged just over six innings per start, and is the proud owner of a 1.45 ERA. He has not struck out a lot of batters, only ten so far, but has been very successful at a pitcher’s most important job – getting batters out. If Chicago needed a starter on short notice, he could be the guy.

As could Mills. The former Royal’s results have not been as impressive – his ERA through two starts is 3.27 – but he has only walked one in his 11 innings of work and actually holds a lower WHIP (0.91) than Butler (1.13). Whether he gets the first shot at spot starting in Chicago, or whether that opportunity goes to Butler, may come down to who is more rested when the day arrives.

The Smokies were rained out.
High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans

This game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh.
Low A: South Bend Cubs
South Bend 9, Great Lakes 6
The Cubs took a six run lead into the ninth, but withstood the three run rally.
