Will these things actually matter? Does anything actually matter? TBD.
A couple notable injuries for the teams ahead of the Cubs in the NL Central standings. First, as we saw last night, Kolten Wong departed with a hamstring injury, and he’s off to get an MRI.
The expectation is that he’ll miss, at a minimum, the next couple days, which will be covered by Tommy Edman. I’d say it’s a blow for the Cardinals, given Wong’s breakout this year, but consider that he’s hitting .285/.361/.423 (108 wRC+) and Edman is hitting .289/.325/.481 (110 wRC+), and is rating just as well defensively. So … they’ll be fine.
As for the Brewers, they might be missing Lorenzo Cain, after he suffered an ankle injury yesterday. It’s been a terrible year at the plate for Cain (.251/.316/.357, 76 wRC+), and he’s battled through a ton of injuries. But his glove still rates as elite in center field, so any loss of time for him could be a net loss for the Brewers.
