With no real baseball to play today because of the Cardinals’ COVID-19 outbreak, the Cubs staged a scrimmage at Wrigley Field today. And apparently David Ross has some mystery competition in mind for tomorrow, though we don’t know any details.
Alec Mills started and went five innings (58 pitches), which gives him a “start” since he won’t go again for another five days. Jordan Bastian says it was three runs (two earned) on six hits, no walks, and three strikeouts.
Among the relievers who went today, Craig Kimbrel worked a scoreless inning with two strikeouts (particular pitches deployed not noted). “Definitely trending in the right direction,” Ross said of Kimbrel, per Cubs.com. “I thought he got some real good swing-and-misses on fastballs today up in the zone. He looked a little more like the Craig that we’ve seen flashes of and that he’s been most of his career.”
