In many cases, baseball nicknames are neither difficult nor creative. Add a ‘y’ sound to the end of the name or part of the name, or maybe do the same but with an ‘s’, and boom you’ve got yourself a baseball nickname. It’s fine.
But it does make the ones that don’t fit that model really stand out and become all the more enjoyable.
The Cubs shared a video of a number of players offering up their nicknames, and although the first player – Cody Bellinger – fits the mold, the second – Seiya Suzuki – definitely does not:
JUSTIN BIEBER?! WHAT?! Either there’s a story there, and I must hear it, or Seiya Suzuki is just being hilarious. I like to imagine that it’s because Seiya busts out in full song and dance in the clubhouse whenever he hears the Biebs. A true Belieber.
Bonus awesomeness in there, Yan Gomes saying his nickname is ‘Best Dad’ while he literally holds a dad coffee mug. And Trey Mancini actually wants to be called Boomer? OK, Boomer.
Jenny from the Block for Ryan Jensen is probably the best one, though. El Kangri (Cangri) for Miguel Amaya is pretty good, because google tells me that translates to The Badass.
