What is Dynasty Fantasy Football?

Dynasty fantasy football leagues are much different than redrafts leagues, as you keep all your players for the lifetime of their careers, unless you trade or release them.

Imagine it’s the Spring of 1975 and you draft Walter Payton of the Bears for your fantasy team. You enjoy his rookie season and think there’s a lot to come of his career.

After all, he looks the part of a true bell cow running back. Unfortunately, you have to have amazing luck in future fantasy football drafts to ever have a chance to get him back on your team.

You see him go from fantasy manager to manager through the years, jealous every season of the lucky team who gets him for those 16 weeks.

Now, imagine a world where that doesn’t happen and you get to reap the rewards of an entire Bears career of Walter Payton that features over 20,000 total yards and more than 100 touchdowns for your fantasy football team.

What is a Dynasty Fantasy Football League?

A dynasty fantasy football league is a league where you retain all of your players from year to year. This creates an environment that is very different from that of a redraft league.

Unlike traditional redraft leagues, a dynasty fantasy football league has no hard reset. After the first season in a dynasty league, you retain 100% of the players you took in the league’s startup draft and carry over all of the players onto your squad into the next year. Dynasty fantasy football leagues work very similarly to managing a real NFL team. Any transaction or move you make will affect your squad for years to come.

By enabling team owners to keep players and build a team over time, there is a much stronger sense of team ownership. Let’s break it down.

How Does a Dynasty League Work?

Starting a dynasty fantasy football league is much like any other league.

In a dynasty or keeper league, you hold an initial draft with all available NFL players, and then an annual rookie and free-agent draft each Spring, Summer, or Fall. You set the draft order and then select new NFL rookies and free agents for your league. Players you draft stay on your roster until you cut or trade them. Trades are one of the best parts of playing in a dynasty or keeper league, unlike in a redraft league where trades rarely occur as there is little incentive to trade during the season.

Both teams are looking to win this year, so it’s a lot harder to structure a deal that benefits both sides. However, in a dynasty fantasy football league, it’s a whole different story. Some teams are rebuilding or building for the future, and are willing to trade away an older veteran who may only have a couple of seasons left in exchange for a promising young rookie or to acquire a draft pick or two in next year’s draft.

On the other hand, other teams are looking to win this season and will give up some future potential in order to solidify their chances now by trading away their draft picks.

Differences Between Dynasty Leagues and Other Leagues

The biggest difference is the fact you truly have ultimate control over your roster from year-to-year. If you hit on a rookie draft pick, you have the rights to that player for as long as you’d like. Having ultimate control over your long-term roster takes any redraft league to the next level as you can truly build a franchise the way you want.

What’s The Difference Between A Dynasty League and a Keeper League?

A keeper league is similar to a dynasty league. In a Keeper league, you can retain only a few players. Whereas in a Dynasty fantasy football league, you can retain most or all players.

Regardless of which you play, DLF can help you become a champion! We’ve been the most trusted resource since establishing the standard in 2006. What is the difference between a dynasty league and a redraft league?

In a dynasty league, you have ultimate player control, which is an obvious benefit compared to a redraft league. But more than that, Dynasty leagues take strategy to the next level. You can choose to focus on aging veterans for your dynasty fantasy football team, or use them to acquire rookie draft picks and build for the future.
