With the departure of Robert Tonyan to the Chicago Bears, the Green Bay Packers had a gaping hole at the tight end position heading into the NFL Draft. They took care of that quickly in the proceedings, taking Oregon State’s Luke Musgrave in the second round and South Dakota State’s Tucker Kraft. With rookies reporting this week and the first practice of Packers training camp coming up this Wednesday, we may already have some clarity on who will be taking the TE1 spot heading into the season.Â
Per beat reporter Matt Schneidman, “…I think Musgrave will be TE1 by Week 1. The Packers think he can be the true No. 1 pass-catching tight end that Robert Tonyan was at times but not consistently enough, someone like Jermichael Finley in his prime perhaps. The best-case scenario for the Packers is Luke Musgrave developing into almost a wide receiver, someone who can line up anywhere and make plays all over the field like Travis Kelce, Darren Waller, and the other most athletic tight ends in the NFL.”
There are many question marks surrounding the Packers for fantasy football right now —namely, how good Jordan Love can be— but if we get certain news that Musgrave is the bona fide TE1 in Green Bay, it could make for an interesting target either late in drafts or off the waiver wire later in the year.

Musgrave’s collegiate stats don’t jump off the page, but two very shortened seasons didn’t help matters. His COVID-shortened 2020 saw him post a 12-142 receiving line, and his final college year only amounted to 22-304-1 due to a knee injury that sidelined him for most of the year. This didn’t bother the Green Bay Packers brass, though, as they would end up spending the 49th-overall selection on the former wide receiver.

Luke Musgrave 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook
The Oregon State Beaver impressed in his two games of his final collegiate season, accruing 15 targets for a 29.4% target share while maintaining an otherworldly 3.38 yards per route run. That is much too small of a sample size to extrapolate out for an entire season, but they are impressive numbers nonetheless. Musgrave isn’t known for his blocking acumen, so that will likely be something we need to see worked on throughout training camp before we’re completely secure with him being on the field for a majority of the snaps.
The good news is, the 6’6″, 250-pound tight end has plenty of experience lining up off the formation, including over 40% of his routes coming from the slot or out-wide throughout his four-year career. If there are any hiccups in fellow rookie Jayden Reed’s development, the team could incorporate more big-slot-type of alignments which would immediately boost Musgrave’s floor in fantasy football.
We are currently taking a wait-and-see approach by ranking Luke Musgrave as the TE27 at the moment. He is projected for somewhere around 40 catches and 400 yards for his rookie season, but there could be quite a lot of upside with him if he turns into an end zone threat on an offense that has a very wide range of outcomes. He makes a lot of sense as a dart throw on teams where you already have Jordan Love, and his turning into a common fantasy football waiver-wire target in good matchups is a likely possibility.Â

Both running backs Aaron Jones, and A.J. Dillon are worthwhile investments at their current draft spots, as well as sophomore wide receiver Christian Watson. The rest of the wide receiver depth chart is a little murkier, but both Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed are considerations, depending on how many receivers you start in your league.
