After a week of uncertainty, including Sean McVay allowing his assistants to seek other job opportunities, reports have McVay returning to the Rams in 2023.
NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo are now reporting that McVay intends to return to the Rams in 2023 and is currently sorting through potential staff changes.
Rapoport reported this week that McVay was considering stepping away one season after taking the Rams to the Super Bowl. Thankfully for Rams fans, they won’t have to begin their search for a new head coach just yet.
McVay will however have to find a new offensive coordinator after Liam Coen took the same job at Kentucky. Coen was named the Ramsโ offensive coordinator on March 2, 2022, after leading Kentuckyโs offense in 2021. Kentucky ranked fifth in the SEC in scoring (32.3 PPG) under Coen and eighth in offense (452.2 yards per game).
Under Coen the Rams ranked 27th in points per game (18.1) and 32nd in yards per game (280.5). The Rams were 27th in passing yards per game (182.8), and 27th in rushing yards per game (97.7).
McVay will have to find a new OC and get back to the drawing board quickly after the Rams turned in one of the more prolific Super Bowl hangover performances in recent memory. In fairness, injuries decimated the Rams this season. Nonetheless, McVay has his work cut out for him in a competitive NFC West next season.
