Jimmy Garoppolo and ‘Addendum G,’ DeAndre Hopkins’ Thoughts, CMC’s Charity Event, and Other NFL Bullets

In the year 2023, everything comes to light eventually, especially in the NFL world. Remember when Jimmy Garoppolo‘s introductory press conference was delayed at the last minute? The delay was because Garropolo had failed his physical, and the team wanted to significantly rework his contract before they announced him to the media in person.

  • According to Pro Football Talk, the Raiders added a waiver and release clause to Garolppolo’s contract. In addition, they moved some 2023 money around to protect themselves if Garoppolo’s foot kept him out this season.
  • The clause says that without the waiver, Garoppolo would not have passed his physical on signing with the Raiders, according to a copy of the addendum obtained by NFL Network, “because of a preexisting medal and middle cuneiform and a fracture of the base of the second metatarsal in the Player’s left foot.” By signing the clause, Garoppolo acknowledged the risk of further injury while playing football, including “permanent disability, loss of motion and other problems related to his left foot,” per NFL Network.
  • This clause essentially protects the Raiders from Garoppolo being damaged goods in 2023. Think of it like a lemon law clause. Garoppolo failed the physical and had surgery on the injured left foot at the direction of Vegas’ team physician. If Josh McDaniels’ words this week come true, then Garoppolo will be ready by Week 1, and this will be much to do about nothing. If not, the Raiders have set themselves up to move on from Garoppolo ahead of the 2023 season “for any reason related to the Waiver and Release attached as Addendum G.”
  • However, the clause says that it becomes null and void at any point during the 2023 season if Garoppolo passes a physical, is active for at least one regular-season game and does not re-injure his left foot in the manner described the addendum.
  • As I wrote a few days ago, Garoppolo’s durability has long been an issue. Since Jimmy Garoppolo entered the NFL, he’s played an entire season just once, in 2019. It’s not likely that Garoppolo is going to discover the durability that has eluded him through his NFL career. But, of course, playing behind a middle-of-the-pack offensive line in Vegas won’t help him realize that durability, either. The season might be 100 days away. Still, Jimmy Garoppolo’s absence from OTAs can’t be chalked up as the non-story that Josh McDaniels is trying to make it.
  • MMQB’s Albert Breer shared some of what he is hearing on the DeAndre Hopkins front on Saturday:
  • Kansas City and Buffalo pushed for a trade but knew a reworked deal was necessary. Hopkins wanted a raise. When OBJ signed in Baltimore for what he did, he reset the market to a level Buffalo and KC weren’t comfortable going to for Hopkins. So, I wouldn’t imagine much changing there now, especially if Hopkins’ reported financial desires are accurate.
  • According to PFT: “Hopkins currently expects to secure a significant contract on the open market. The problem, however, is that no one wanted to trade for his prior deal, which paid less than $20 million this year.”
  • Antonio Brown with another truly shocking moment. After promising to play for his(?) indoor football team and seeing a spike in ticket sales, Brown was a no show.
  • San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is putting together an incredible charity event for a great cause. The story behind why is absolutely a heartbreaker.
  • Well, that was fun while it lasted …
