Josh Harris and one of his partners, Mitchell Rales, met with the NFL’s finance committee in New York on Wednesday afternoon. According to Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay (an NFL finance committee member) the meeting went well. While the sale of the Washington Commanders to the Josh Harris group is trending toward completion, it’s not there yet.
While both sides appear to be motivated to get the sale to the finish line, there are hurdles to clear. There has been concern over the debt load, and the amount of equity in the deal. The NFL does not want owners to take on more than $1.1 billion in debt. Colts owner Jim Irsay has said that even with all parties wanting the deal to get done, it would not happen outside of the NFL’s rules for purchasing teams.
However, the latest report is encouraging. It shows that the parties involved are working toward getting the Harris offer into compliance. The Commanders deal could be completed in the next “month to two months at the most,” according to Irsay.
“It’s going well,” Irsay said. “I’m hopeful because of their inspired aspect and their enthusiasm and their track record that they’re really committing, saying, ‘Well if that doesn’t work then I’ll make it right. Either way, we’re going to make it right.’ So we’re just trying to work through those final details. And I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to. I would imagine something in mid to late July would be the earliest we’d call it league meeting.”

Dalvin Cook’s six-year tenure in Minnesota has come to an end. Adam Schefter and multiple other news breakers shared the news of Cook’s impending release this morning. Cook joins fellow veterans Eric Kendricks and Adam Thielen as casualties of the Vikings’ re-shaping of their roster. Minnesota has gone in the direction of younger and cheaper this offseason. With Justin Jefferson’s looming extension and Kirk Cousins having no guaranteed money remaining on his deal beyond 2023, the Vikings are re-directing their cap resources in anticipation.
Despite Dalvin Cook playing an entire season in 2022 and having his second-most carries and rushing yards of his career, Minnesota will turn to his understudy Alex Mattison to handle the backfield workload in 2023. The Vikings have the option to trade Cook before his official release, but thus far, there has been little interest. It seems unlikely that anyone would be willing to trade for him when they could simply wait for his release.
On Wednesday, Tom Pelissero reported that DeAndre Hopkins will be visiting with the Titans next week. That has now been confirmed by Titans head coach Mike Vrabel.
“The first thing is we want players that want to be here,” Vrabel said (via the Titans team website). “We’ll work through anything else. We brought in a bunch of different players, and DeAndre will be somebody that we’ll bring in next week, early next week, at the end of this week, and go through the same visit we’ll go through with everybody and start the process.”
Vrabel and Hopkins are no strangers. Vrabel was a member of the Texans coaching staff from 2014-2017 when Hopkins was on the team. Titans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly also served on Houston’s staff when Hopkins was with the team. So, there’s a level of familiarity and past success there for Hopkins. At first blush, the Titans don’t seem like a fit for Hopkins. Based on what he said he wants in his next gig, anyway. Tennessee isn’t a Super Bowl contender. However, the market for Hopkins is less robust than he would have hoped. So, he may end up in Tennessee. He’ll have more options, but the question is how many more.
