The New York Jets have been linked to Dalvin Cook, a bunch in recent weeks. Never more than last weekend’s visit to Jets camp in which Cook was on the field and cheered by the New York fans. While Cook hasn’t signed with the Jets yet, it seems like another suitor is moving on from the veteran running back.
Patriots Reportedly Out on Dalvin Cook
Along with the Jets and Dolphins, the New England Patriots were rumored to be a potential landing spot for running back Dalvin Cook. However, New England seems to be moving on from that possibility.
According to Jeff Howe (The Athletic), “The Patriots, who has some peripheral interest in Cook, are now almost certainly not going in that direction, according to a league source.”
With the Patriots out of the equation, Dalvin Cook to the Jets seems likelier than ever. Unless a new team emerges from the Cook sweepstakes shadows, Cook’s options have dwindled to the Jets and the Jets alone.
However, the Patriots aren’t out of the market for a running back. Last week former Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott was seen having dinner with Patriots’ quarterback Mac Jones after a visit with the team. According to Howe, the Cowboys are also in the mix to bring Elliott back to Dallas on a more affordable contract. Howe also said that the Jets have been “in on” Elliott, giving them more bargaining power with Dalvin Cook.
Joe Mixon Facing Civil Suit Over March Shooting
You might remember the news in March involving Bengals running back Joe Mixon and shooting on the property of his Hamilton County home. Shortly after the shooting, in which a 16-year-old boy was shot in the foot, Lamonte Brewer was charged with felonious assault, one count of tampering with evidence, and two counts of having weapons while under disability. Brewer was the boyfriend of Mixon’s sister, Shalonda Mixon, who was also charged with tampering with evidence.
Mixon was not charged and was never considered a suspect, Hamilton County prosecutor Melissa Powers said in March when Brewer was charged. However, in the lawsuit filed Thursday, the family claims that Mixon supplied the bullets and Zastava M92 gun that was matched to the weapon used in the shooting.
Brewer alleges that he feared for his life and insisted that he didn’t know that the teenagers — including the victim who lived next door to Mixon — were playing a game involving Nerf toy guns. The suit argues that defense, calling it “unreasonable.”
“The defense that the Mixon home occupants felt in fear of their lives from 16-year-old high school students playing Nerf Wars with green, blue, and grey colored toy nerf rifles in the neighbor’s yard is utterly ridiculous, unbelievable,” the lawsuit states, “and it is unreasonable that Joe Mixon or anyone in Mixon’s home could have feared for their lives.”
The family is suing Mixon, claiming negligence and several other claims (according to ESPN). Mixon has a jury trial set for August 14 in an unrelated case involving allegations that Mixon pointed a gun at a motorist during a road rage incident and threatened to shoot her. Mixon pleaded not guilty to aggravated menacing charges, a misdemeanor in Ohio.
