Healthy Howard, Fun With College Football Faves, Graham Can Fly … Literally, Draft Re-Dos, and Other Bears Bullets

My plan for today is to try a mac & cheese recipe I found in an old cookbook a few days ago, but I know this recipe was made to feed a family on Thanksgiving. So I’m sitting here wondering if I should half the recipe because I don’t need all that Mac & cheese or if I should go all-in and cross the bridge known as a week’s worth of leftovers when we get there.

Well, this is disappointing to share: Steve Greenberg of the Chicago Sun-Times reports the Bears have opted *NOT* to extend the payment deadline for season-ticket holders. “Our beloved Chicago Bears demanded I get them my $20,000 for my 41st year as a season-ticket holder or they would take the tickets away,” Bomher told Greenberg in an e-mail. Bomher would go on to say in the e-mail that he wrote the check and will do the forgive and forget thing if they have a good season. Even still … this is unsettling to read.

I don’t want to be an alarmist. That’s not my style. But I see the suspensions of the NBA, NHL, and MLB seasons, and a postponement for the 2020 Olympic Summer Games that were supposed to take place July 24 through August 9 in Japan, and it isn’t that difficult to envision the football season having to push pause in the early part of its year. I’m not expecting and I’m obviously not rooting for it, but I am mindful that the possibility exists. Hence, it doesn’t sit right with me that the Bears are demanding season-ticket money at a time when other teams have decided to delay payments for season-tickets. To me, this is a whiff when it comes to doing right by the fan base.

On a lighter note, I enjoyed having fun answering the question laid out by Bleacher Report draft guru Matt Miller, asking about the five greatest college players of your lifetime. Here are mine:

Charles Woodson’s performance at Michigan might be more of a reason that I’m a football fan than anything the Bears did to pull me in as a child. And when I drifted away from the game in the 2010s, Johnny Manziel lighting up Alabama (and other defenses across the SEC) brought me back to the game. Tim Tebow and Reggie Bush were must-see-TV. Tommie Frazier’s Nebraska squads got me interested in how the option offense worked.

And to think, there were dudes that I missed whose games I loved. Willis McGahee, Ken Dorsey, and the late Sean Taylor were among the brightest stars that made watching Miami football fun. Lamar Jackson and Vince Young are somewhere in my top-10, while impact players like Eddie George, Adrian Peterson, Orlando Pace, Peyton Manning, Ricky Williams, Drew Brees, Ed Reed, and Julius Peppers deserve to be on the list at some point. That’s just a small collection of players who I remember watching when I was younger.

I wonder if Brian Urlacher would have made the cut had I been able to watch New Mexico football when he was playing.

Gotta love what Allen Robinson is doing to lead the charge with his hunger relief campaign for Chicago Public School students during these trying times. Larry Mayer (the Chicago Bears’ official website) has more on Robinson’s commendable efforts.

Some good news from an old friend: Dolphins running back Jordan Howard tells Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post the shoulder injury that limited him to just one offensive snap after Week 9 is a thing of the past. Howard says he is 100 percent, which is encouraging news for the ex-Bear. Before the injury, Howard averaged 4.4 yards per cary and was on pace for a 933-yard, 12-touchdown season with the Eagles.

More importantly, Howard proved that there was a spot for him in Matt Nagy’s offense if used properly. Here’s hoping Nagy watched tape of how his former boss Doug Pederson used Howard, then applies what he learned to get David Montgomery the ball.

Draft re-dos can be fun. For example, Gil Brandt (NFL Network) re-did the 2012 NFL Draft … and it is a doozy. Andrew Luck remain the No. 1 overall selection, but this time around, is followed by Russell Wilson (Washington) and Nick Foles (Cleveland) at the top of the draft. T.Y. Hilton (Round 3, Pick 92) is a top-5 pick in the do-over, Alshon Jeffery (a second-round pick of the Bears that year) goes in the top-10, Kirk Cousins (a fourth-rounder) lands in the top-15. It’s madness. As for the Bears, they end up with Bobby Wagner, the heir apparent to Brian Urlacher in the middle of Chicago’s defense. Wagner is a six-time Pro Bowler, five-time first team All-Pro, and was a key component in the Seahawks’ Super Bowl victory against the Broncos. In fact, Wagner would probably be a two-time Super Bowl champ had Pete Carroll tried to run Marshawn Lynch into the end zone and not have Russell Wilson fling it at the goal line in the waning moments against the Patriots. Whoops.

I am still mildly annoyed the Bears didn’t snag one of those picks as part of taking on Nick Foles’ salary and having to give up a fourth-round pick to do so. We’re still waiting official word on that restructured deal, by the way.
