I don’t want to do the whole farewell, hold-back-the-tears thing again – it feels like the third or fourth time at this point – but today could be the last time Willson Contreras plays at Wrigley Field as a Chicago Cub. With free agency coming, and with very little indication that the two sides will be agreeing on a new contract, it just seems likely that this is it.
And Contreras himself sure makes it sound like it:
He’s just being realistic. It’s sad. But this is what was always coming, whether it was at the trade deadline or in free agency.
Now all that’s left to do is play out the season, and then make Contreras a Qualifying Offer. We’ll see what happens after that.
