Bulls Revamp Continues: Early GM Candidates, Adrian Griffin as Jim Boylen’s Replacement? Forman’s Future, More

Arturas Karnisovas hasn’t even officially been announced as the next executive VP of basketball operations, but he’s already making some major moves to shake things up.

Earlier today, for example, we learned of the team’s intentions to hire JJ Polk away from the New Orleans Pelicans as an assistant GM. Polk, known as a cap specialist, has been in the Pelicans organization for nearly a decade and currently serves as the director of basketball administration. Later on, for another, we got word that Karnisovas planned to hire Nuggets director of pro personnel Pat Connelly, as well. His position seems to be up for debate right now, but he used to be an assistant GM with the Suns and the director of player personnel for the Wizards.

A cap enthusiast and an extremely experienced scout? Where am I!? What organization is this!?

The best news is Karnisovas isn’t done yet, and the front office overhaul news just keeps on coming (I’m actually writing this … it’s real … it’s happening … *single tear drips onto keyboard*).

  • The Bulls have a new No. 1, so now it’s time to find a No. 2! ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that Karnisovas’ GM search will start up soon, and he even shared a couple of names that are expected to be on the list:
  • The Bulls could end up in a bidding war for Calvin Booth. As the Denver Nuggets assistant general manager, Booth wouldn’t be a surprising candidate for the promotion. The other names on the list are all assistant general managers with their respective organizations, as well. And interestingly enough, each seems to have an extensive background/focus in scouting, specifically. Booth, Marc Eversley, and Mark Hughes have each been in charge of player personnel for a team at one point or another. Although, I think it’s worth noting that out of Woj’s (national) list, only Booth and Matt Lloyd are the names that have been reported as possibilities by (local) K.C. Johnson.
  • Not long after Woj’s report, the Sun-Times Joe Cowley added some names of his own into the mix:
  • As NBC Sports Chicago reported, the Bulls have already spoken with former-Bull Nazr Mohammed (now working within OKC’s front office) about an undisclosed job opening, so we at least know those wheels are already in motion. Hey, anyone that shoves LeBron James is good with me. Plus, according to Cowley, he really wants the gig.
  • The one unexpected name to see on this list is Troy Weaver. While I would love if he were a candidate, Yahoo Sports reported that Oklahoma City didn’t give the Bulls permission to interview him for what was (likely) the VP of basketball operations job. If that’s the case, why would that change for the No. 2 opening? Unless that report was wrong?
  • Anyway, Michael Finley (an Illinois native, woot woot) is a very respected name in NBA circles, and according to Sports Illustrated, has practically been endorsed by his boss for the open role. As current vice president of basketball operations for the Mavericks, it would be interesting to see if he’d take this spot under Karnisovas. But if so, I’d welcome him in with open arms. Oh, and lastly, we have our old friend Matt Lloyd, the current Orlando Magic assistant GM, who has plenty of ties to the Bulls organization.
  • I’m sure a lot of names will be in and out of our news feed over the next several days, so if you take anything away from this, it should be that the Bulls are targeting established executives. Cowley tweeted out that Michael Reinsdorf is prepared to spend the money, which certainly makes it feel like the tides are turning in Chicago. Watch out, NBA … the Bulls are coming!
  • Ready to salivate? Here ya go:
  • AAAHHHHOOOGGAAAA. ME LIKEY. I think it’s important we remember that there has been no real update on Jim Boylen’s status thus far. While it feels like he’s a dead man walking, you know what they say when you assume. Toronto Raptors assistant coach Adrian Griffin has been a fan-favorite to throw into the “new coaches” conversation, and I guess there is some smoke within the organization now. Not only did Griffin use to play for Chicago and serve as an assistant coach for the Bulls from 2010-2015, but he also played college ball with Karnisovas at Seton Hall. Talk about intrigue.
  • No update on Gar Forman’s status just yet. However, I can’t say it’s looking good.
