Cubs Will Decide on Spring Training Location Soon – Mesa Could Give a Clue
The Chicago Cubs are expected to decide whether to remain in Mesa, AZ for Spring Training beyond 2011, or to move to Naples, FL, by the end of January.
But we may be getting a strong clue as soon as tomorrow.
A decision on whether to spend $684,000 to build covered batting cages for the Chicago Cubs at Fitch Park is likely by the end of the week, City Manager Chris Brady said Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Cubs are wrestling with a decision of their own: Whether to stay in Mesa for spring training, or step onto the red carpet being rolled out for them by Naples, Fla.
The batting cage issue first surfaced publicly during the council’s Dec. 10 study session in the form of a resolution that would authorize Brady to sign a contract for up to $750,000 for two 5,000-square-foot buildings to house two batting cages each, along with the electronic equipment that goes with modern batting practice. Though it will not be conclusive, if Mesa decides to go ahead and build the new batting cages, it could suggest that they are confident the Cubs will continue to Spring in Mesa.
If, on the other hand, they decline to do this for the team, it could mean they don’t like their chances to hang onto the Cubs – otherwise, why would you risk pissing off the team you’re still trying to woo?
