Trade Deadline Blogathon: Hour Nine

I am currently blogging – here, on Facebook, and on Twitter – for 24 hours straight, until slightly past MLB’s July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The plan is to do a little recap like this periodically through the day/night. We’ll see if the “plan” still holds by hour 20 when I’m starting to suspect my keyboard might be chocolate.

Ah, the wee hours of the morning. It’s the time when I can post just about anything with impunity. Pictures of kittens? Sure. My thoughts on a counter-Impressionist revolution in post-war Spain? Why not. Completely made up phrases like “counter-Impressionist revolution in post-war Spain”? You bet. Cubs rumors? Oh, I guess.

News and Rumors Since the Last Recap:

Nothing in the Cubs’ world. I did hear about the Cubs approaching Kerry Wood about a trade to Philadelphia at some point in the recent past, but Wood said no thanks. CCO says Bruce Levine was reporting it, though no one seems to have written an article. If true, Wood *really* doesn’t want to leave Chicago.

Most Interesting Tidbit Since the Last Recap:

That the Rich Harden to Boston trade fell apart at the very last moment is a reminder that dozens and dozens of trades reach varying stages of completion – from mere talks, to exchanging names, to handshake agreements, and so on – without actually being completed. How many do we never even hear about?

Current Thoughts About the Chicago Cubs’ Trade Deadline Strategy/Execution:

When you’ve started hoping the Cubs are working the phones to move John Grabow, optimism is at a nadir.

Current Beverage/Stimulant of Choice:

Starbucks mocha frappuccino. I’m naughty!

Strangest Thought Passing Through My Mind:

Since it came up in the comments, it’s been absolutely stuck in my head: The Cleveland Tourism Videos. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Enjoy:

There’s a second video that’s funnier than the first. But, for some reason, I’m not permitted to embed it. Here is is on YouTube.

Enhanced Box Score: Red Sox 5, Cubs 4 – April 28, 2024

Yeah, I don't know how that could have ended any other way....an in-between blooper that bounces of Dansby Swanson's glove*, which simultaneously leads to the first earned run Mark Leiter Jr. has allowed this year and a walk-off win for...

Mike Tauchman Ties the Game with an 8th-Inning, Three-Run BLAST!

Nothing about this game so far had been enjoyable. From the broadcast, to the Cubs prouduction, to all the luck seemingly going the Red Sox way. But after finally chasing Tanner Houck out of the game, the Cubs were able...

Cubs Roster Moves: Jordan Wicks (IL) and Luke Little (Iowa) Replaced by Two Relievers Out of Triple-A

Cade Horton Dominates Once Again in His Latest Start

Another day, another dominant Double-A start from top Cubs pitching prospect Cade Horton. The 22-year-old righty went 5.0 scoreless innings for the Tennessee Smokies, allowing five hits, no walks, and striking out six. https://twitter.com/MLBPipeline/status/1784397003340034131 There sure doesn't seem to be...

Oh, Noooo: Jordan Wicks Has Forearm Tightness and Won’t Start Tomorrow

At the end of a nice winning streak, it was easy enough to shrug off a throwaway 17-0 loss to the Red Sox. And I didn't even let Christopher Morel's tumble and early exit throw me, as he was apparently...

Enhanced Box Score: Red Sox 17, Cubs 0 – April 27, 2024

Here's how you sum that one up: It's not too often that you see a position player pitching TAKEN OUT MID-INNING because he hit his pitch count. But that happened today. So, yeah, that did not go well. Unless, of...

Justin Steele Could Be Back Sooner Than (I) Expected (UPDATE)

And here I was thinking the only silver lining about Justin Steele's Opening Day hamstring injury was the path it cleared for Javier Assad and Ben Brown to step into the rotation. Turns out there's another positive with respect to...
