Alec Mills’ third start (during this stretch of fill-in appearances), the one against the Dodgers, wasn’t very good.
With 8 hits and 2 walks through 4.0 innings, he was lucky to give up only 2 runs total. The Dodgers are a tough team, but it just wasn’t a very good performance in terms of results, peripherals, the eye test, all of it. His two starts before that, however, were arguably better than the final stat line(s) revealed. In fact, he gave me a bit of hope there for a moment. Then again, the Mets and Marlins are far weaker offensive opponents than the Dodgers, so it all kind of adds up.
And unfortunately, the Reds are one of the best run scoring teams in baseball this year and tonight’s game is at one of the more hitter friendly parks in the league. So this won’t be easy for Mills or the Cubs, who are riding a six game losing streak.
