Kyle Hendricks didn’t quite make history tonight, but he did make a 2023 mark: at 7.2 innings, Hendricks took a no-hitter deeper into a game than any other pitcher this season. Given where he’s coming from, that’s pretty freaking incredible.
It was vintage Hendricks, with his command and tunneling at its best. There was enough hard contact that he could have given up some damage – that Mike Tauchman catch, in particular, was incredible – but that was only sprinkled in among tons and tons of crummy contact, largely on the ground. Much more on Hendricks soon.
Offensively, the Cubs got long balls from Matt Mervis and Christopher Morel (they both needed that), with Morel tacking on an RBI single for good measure.
Great night for the Cubs, and truly a great night for Kyle Hendricks. What a comeback story he’s been.
Just one more thing to say …
