The Bears announced Tyler Bray has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. To make space for Bray on the roster, the Bears have parted ways with tight end Bradley Sowell.
In adding Bray to the 53-man roster, the Bears now have two healthy quarterbacks available for Sunday’s game against the Raiders. Regular starter Mitch Trubisky is out with an injured non-throwing shoulder.
Had Bray not been pushed to the active roster, the Bears could have tabbed a skill position player with prior quarterbacking experience (think Trey Burton) in an emergency. But with Bray on board, Burton (or long-time Wildcat QB Tarik Cohen … or even do-it-all speedster Cordarrelle Patterson) is not responsible for backup quarterbacking duties. And while it would have been cool to see the Bears dive deep into their bag of tricks, there is something re-assuring about having Bray as a backup.
