Shaheen’s MMA Workout Plan, Mack Strives For Greatness, Possible New Formations, and Other Bullets

It was a late night for the “Outside The Ivy” crew …

… so I hope you’ll forgive me for the late start on Bullets.

  • Hopefully, watching Mitch Trubisky and friends chug their way to the first win of the 2019 season did its part in holding you over.
  • Ah, yes. There was throwing involved, too:
  • Is there anything Matt Nagy won’t do to put a new look on tape for opposing defensive coordinators? Check this out:
  • This shot has Bobby Massie at right guard, Cody Whitehair in the middle, James Daniels at left guard, and Rashaad Coward at right tackle. That’s certainly different. Should the Bears use this configuration in the coming year, they should call it the Shoeless Joe Formation.
  • Coach Nagy probably added this to the playbook before I could finish typing this sentence:
  • Khalil Mack is busy chasing greatness:
  • Mack was a monster last year. And while others would have taken a step back because they sat out OTAs, training camp, and the preseason, Mack showed why he’s a different type of beast by dominating without the benefit of preseason and offseason workouts.
  • With that in mind, JJ Stankevitz of NBC Sports Chicago is one of many who wonders what Mack will be capable with a full offseason of working with his teammates:
  • Hey now, Mack isn’t the only one working at his craft! Tight end Adam Shaheen told Hub Arkush (Pro Football Weekly) that he took up mixed martial arts during the offseason. The idea behind this type of training was to add balance and flexibility, while also trimming some of the fat from his frame. Shaheen is a large figure who looks tough to tackle, but that hasn’t proven to be the case to this point of his NFL career. Watching him get taken down by diminutive cornerback Cre’von LeBlanc in last year’s playoff game still makes me cringe. But at least Shaheen knows what he needs to be better at and is working at it.

  • Some love for Anthony Miller from PFF’s Daniel Kelley, who views Miller as a valuable fantasy handcuff. Kelley notes that the Bears had a unique balance with Miller, Allen Robinson, and Taylor Gabriel, the team’s top three receivers. They all had similar average depths of targets and each spent time rotating in and out of the slot. And while Miller was given nearly half as many targets, he still led the team in touchdown receptions. If Miller is healthy, he’ll continue to get playing time in this offense. But if something were to happen with someone ahead of him, Miller will be well-positioned to get a larger bulk of targets (and possibly receptions, yards, and touchdowns).
  • As for the Bears’ other 2017 second-round pick, it looks like he could use a swing coach on the golf course:
  • I shouldn’t even say anything about that swing because yours truly hasn’t picked up a golf club since 2010. Anyone want to help a guy out?
  • Apparently, the Bears have had their eyes on T.J. Clemmings for a while now:
  • Coffee gear, tools, and trampolines are among your Deals of the Day at Amazon today.
  • Pro Football Talk’s Darin Gantt notes that Illinois became the 11th state to allow recreational marijuana use, and that nine NFL teams play in states where recreational marijuana is legal. Gantt goes on to point out that as the stigma surrounding marijuana use is fading, the league ditching penalties for its recreational use could come up in negotiations of the next collective bargaining agreement. Things are changing as we’re getting older. Here’s to progressive change for the betterment of society.
  • Love seeing ex-Bears reach out into the community:
  • I see the Bears aren’t the only team in Chicago shuffling things at the center position:
