Anchors in the Secondary, Free Agent Watch, Rank the RB Tandems, and Other Bears Bullets

There are few things I love as much as a Javy Báez homer heater, especially with the latest one being a 459-foot grand slam to silence a heckler. That’s quality content for your Saturday morning.

  • Good morning! The Bears signed the first of their two second-round picks, making it officially official with cornerback Kyler Gordon. In case you’d like to refresh your memory, this is what Gordon can do:
  • This defense’s youth movement starts in the secondary, which is likely a reason NBC Sports Chicago’s Josh Schrock writes about Gordon and safety Jaquan Brisker as being vital to the defense.
  • I still find myself digging into free agency bins, if only to see who’s available at what positions. It’s always good to have an idea of who can be called upon at a moment’s notice. Over at Bleacher Report, Ian Wharton whittles it down to the 10 best free agents who are under 30. The “under 30” qualifier might be what might be most pertinent to the Bears, who have made it a pattern of signing players who are 30 and younger in Ryan Poles’ first free agency as GM. Even though there hasn’t been much rumbling around the Bears and these players, Chicago’s football team is seen as a best fit. One is a bit of a surprise, while the other is an obvious fit. Receiver Will Fuller V is a player we’ve been discussing as a possible Bears target for a while. So, I don’t want to beat that into the ground any more than we already have. On the other hand, the Landon Collins fit confuses me.
  • The Bears seem pretty set at safety with Eddie Jackson and Jaquan Brisker teaming up as starters. DeAndre Houston-Carson and Dane Cruikshank seem like usable depth pieces. Elijah Hicks, a seventh-round pick in this past spring’s draft, is in a developmental phase. If the Bears were wanting to slow-play Brisker as a starter. Or perhaps deploy Jackson or Brisker in a different role, then maybe Collins would make sense. But the Bears haven’t made any indications even hinting at that possibility. Had the Bears gone in a different direction on draft weekend, targeting Collins makes sense. But now? Not so much. Even still … it’s good to know he is still out there if a worst-case scenario plays out.
  • You already know the answer to this one, friends:
  • Some things are bigger than football:
  • Even though NFL Sunday Ticket is set to change hands and have a new provider soon, PFT’s Mike Florio notes that television contracts with CBS and FOX will keep Ticket prices from getting the type of “significant reduction” fans might’ve been looking forward to seeing.
  • Sorry, prospect hipsters. There will be no supplemental draft in 2022, per NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero.
  • Need a football fix? The USFL has you covered:
  • Ope! Can’t believe I missed this important date in NFL/Bears history:
  • Meet the new guy:
  • Another new guy appears to be on the horizon:
  • Jeebus, what a hit:
