Bears Bullets: ‘Delusional’ Trubisky, QB Relationships, Ranking The NFL’s Best, More

Bears fans aren’t the only ones dreaming on a brighter future.

Kyle Long has reason to be optimistic, especially if the team’s key players can stay healthy and if the additions of depth pieces throughout the roster perform to their capabilities. The Bears have a re-worked a secondary that has high hopes, hungry pass rushers, and a defensive linemen who sees himself as part of a potential top-10 defense.

Hope springs eternal in July.

  • Over at Pro Football Talk, Mike Florio writes about how rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky walking the thin line between confident and delusional after his non-guarantee that the Bears will make the playoffs.
  • The most interesting storylines that will play out in 2017 will be the relationship between Trubisky and starting quarterback Mike Glennon. Last season, it was something the Dallas Cowboys conquered – albeit with a higher-profile starter. Dak Prescott opened up about his relationship with Tony Romo, who was expected to be the starter in 2016 before injuries finished his year before it could get started and led to his eventual retirement. Prescott commended Romo for his professionalism and felt that Romo’s help was beneficial to his development.
  • One of the most beneficial things that aided in Prescott’s development was a top-notch offensive line. Pro Football Focus says the Bears have a top-5 line, despite not having dependable tackles. The interior of the line did much of the heavy lifting last year (especially with Josh Sitton at left guard) and is expected to do the same this year. Still, the Bears eventually need to shore up the bookends. Perhaps they will find that player in the 2018 NFL Draft. Daniel Jeremiah writes about Connor Williams, a junior offensive tackle from Texas who grades higher than anyone who was available in the league’s most recent draft. Williams is a mauler in the running game with athleticism that makes him a top tier pass blocker, too. There aren’t too many holes in his game, but we’ll keep an eye on him during the college football season.
  • I might end up beating this into the ground, but I can’t say enough about how the Raiders were successful in their rebuild. The latest “wow” moment I had was when I saw that the team had a top-6 run blocker at each of their offensive line positions. And they were the only team that can boast that right now:
  • More than anything, it’s great to see Cody Whitehair on that list among the centers.
  • Get geared up for the season by browsing Hub Arkush’s top 10 players list at Pro Football Weekly. *SPOILER ALERT* No Bears made the top 10, but four players who are on teams Chicago will play in 2017 do make the cut.
  • It’s probably not happening this year, but someday soon, the Bears will have a quarterback who will be relevant in fantasy football:
