Tony Romo is Getting PAID! And Other Bears Bullets

I put together a to-do list at the beginning of every month. At its core, the list is supposed to help guide me through the things I want (or need) to get done in the days and weeks to come. I’m disappointed to say — that even when given an extra day in February — I didn’t get to everything this month. And while I have no one to blame but myself, this is a pretty good teachable moment.

Onward to March. And onward with today’s Bullets.

  • HOLY SMOKES, TONY ROMO IS GETTING PAID:
  • If CBS will pay $17 million for a broadcaster, how much will they be willing to pay for game rights? I fully expect CBS to be all-in on renewing its contract with the NFL after this move.
  • I’ll say this for Romo: He brought some pizzazz to the booth with his style. It’s unconventional, and I understand where it could be grating in some instances. But more often than not, Romo is entertaining and insightful. And if the game is good, that’s all I want from my broadcasters. Give fans a clean call of a good game and the complaints will be minimal.
  • Does Romo staying with CBS bring us that much closer to the dream of having Jay Cutler on Monday Night Football? I sure hope so.

  • Here’s a twist I didn’t expect:

  • OK, it’s definitely weird that Romo is going to be making more than some of the players he’ll analyze on any given Sunday. Don’t get me wrong, Romo is good at what he does. But I’m not tuning in to a specific game just because he is calling it. Hence, I can’t fathom how his salary ballooned to $17 million. Then again, as Rodger Sherman points out in the tweet above, a network that pays more than $1 billion for the right to show games can afford to pay someone $17 million to broadcast them. Even still … that’s crazy money.
  • ICYMI: The Bears have reportedly touched base with the Bengals regarding a possible trade for Andy Dalton. An offseason of rumors loosely connecting the Bears with the Bengals’ quarterback finally saw a more firm connection. Dalton makes sense as the type of quarterback whose competent level of play could be a match for a team whose defense is good enough to get to the playoffs (and could go deep with an offense that made a bit of noise). Expected compensation for Dalton varies at this point, so it’s not as if a deal is close to getting done. But it’s something to keep watching.
  • Elsewhere in the land of quarterbacks, Jake Fromm told NBC Sports Chicago he sees landing in Chicago as a potential “home away from home” situation. With Roquan Smith, Javon Wims, Riley Ridley, and Leonard Floyd as Georgia products already on board, bringing in Fromm would only add to the reunion. Fromm is a top-50 prospect in some circles and is a top-5 quarterback prospect in this class. A strong set of interviews could have done wonders for him at the Combine. And if he impressed the Bears enough, I can envision him as someone they might be willing to draft as a developmental quarterback behind Mitch Trubisky and a veteran quarterback to be named later.

  • This would be a good time to mention that Chicago met with Georgia’s Rodrigo Blankenship at the Senior Bowl.
  • There was a time when Louisville’s Mekhi Becton was a projected second-round pick. Those days are long gone, especially after this:

  • Good luck to any defenders who are in this man’s path when he is trying to clear a running lane.
  • WHEW:
  • Why not just make the whole thing out of joint practices?
  • Sharing for a good cause:
