Connor Bedard Makes History, Wins Three Top CHL Awards

We’ve been hearing for some time about how good Connor Bedard is at the hockey. As the anticipation of his draft grew this past season, excitement navigated its way to losses and the bottom of the standings. And the thrills all culminated when the Blackhawks won the right to select the generational prospect at the NHL Draft Lottery.

In less than four weeks, Bedard will hear his name called first overall by Chicago general manager Kyle Davidson. On Saturday evening, he was busy collecting hardware at a historic rate at the CHL’s annual awards presentation.

Bedard was named the CHL’s Top Prospect Award presented by Kubota Canada, won the Top Scorer Award, and was named the David Branch Player of the Year Award presented by Kia Canada.

This is the first time in CHL history that a skater has won all three of these awards in the same season since the introduction of the CHL’s Top Scorer award in 1994.

The last time a player won three awards was Connor McDavid, who won the David Branch Player of the Year, Top Prospect & Scholastic Player of the Year awards.

Bedard all CHL skaters in goals (71), points (143), shots on goal (360), and points per game (2.51) in 57 regular-season games this past season. And he became the first Western Hockey League player in 27 years to top 140 points during the regular season.

In other awards:

  • Ducks’ prospect Olen Zellweger was named the Defenceman of the Year.
  • Nathan Darveau of Victoriaville was named the Goaltender of the Year.
  • Maxim Massé was named the Rookie of the Year.
  • Ottawa 67s’ head coach Dave Cameron was named the Coach of the Year.
  • Rangers’ prospect Evan Vierling was named the Sportsman of the Year.
  • Colby Barlow won the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year Award.
  • Dalyn Wakely won the CHL Humanitarian of the Year Award.
