Spring Training Bullets: A’s 15, Cubs 7 – February 27, 2011

For an inning, with the Cubs up 4-0, Spring Training was telling of things to come. And then it was totally just Spring Training again. Pff. Who cares about the score, right?

  • First the good: Carlos Zambrano was dominant in two innings of work, and Starlin Castro, Marlon Byrd and Alfonso Soriano had multiple hits. Matt Garza had his first professional hit ever. Yes, ever.
  • And the rest: Matt Garza gave up a grand slam, Tyler Colvin had two errors in right field (good thing he’s learning first base, right?), Blake DeWitt went 0-3 with 5 left on base and an error, John Grabow and Jeff Samardzija (each of whom have the inside track on bullpen positions for reasons wholly unrelated to, you know, ability) had rough innings of work, and Justin Berg came out of his 1/3 inning of work with a 189.00 ERA.
  • Positional/Roster Battles: Fernando Perez actually had a hit after taking over in center field. Darwin Barney did the same after taking over at short. Your move, Monsieurs Johnson and Ojeda.

More Fun With Michael Busch’s Walk-Off Homer
