With how position groups are broken up throughout the Halas Hall practice fields, it is impossible to see everything.
So, I was freaking out a bit when I saw this push notification while I had my eyes on the Bears defense:
In in a double whammy, OC Luke Getsy told reporters (via Zack Pearson) that he didn’t see what happened with the apparent injury.
Seriously, it is impossible to take note of *EVERYTHING* even when you’re trying your darnedest.
In any case, Jason Lieser (Sun-Times) reports it is a thumb injury. Ouch. No details about the severity. However, that it knocked him out of practice isn’t ideal. Hopefully, this was more of a precautionary measure than anything. In a just football universe, Patrick’s hand injury isn’t something that keeps him out for long. If it does, then the Bears should be quick in reaching out to free agent J.C. Tretter. Especially in the wake of this news from Bucs camp:
In the event that the Bears don’t end up turning to Tretter (who would be a sensible addition even if everyone on the line was healthy), it is worth jotting down that rookie Day 3 pick Doug Kramer filling in at center with Patrick out of the lineup. Considering Sam Mustipher’s experience at the position as a pro, it feels telling that a sixth-round rookie was getting the nod as the second center. There was one iffy snap, but Kramer otherwise held down the fort while working alongside Braxton Jones (LT), Cody Whitehair (LG), Mustipher (RG), and Larry Borom (RT).
Free agent players don’t pull for camp injuries, but everyone knows they are inevitable. Hence, we see veterans sit out the early part of camp waiting for a situation that best suits them. We could soon see Tretter’s name hit the rumor mill after today’s news.
