Cubs Minor League Daily: Rain In Iowa, Walks In Oregon

eugene emeralds logoYesterday was a very slow day in the Cubs’ organization. Iowa was rained out, Tennessee and South Bend had off days, and Myrtle Beach and Eugene lost by fairly wide margins. Only Arizona turned in a close game (not to mention the only Cubs’ win in the continental United States).

I had intended to spend this space talking about how Jorge Soler and Dexter Fowler performed in their rehab assignment in Iowa, but Mother Nature did not cooperate. Hopefully we have more to discuss on the rehab front tomorrow.

My back up plan was to write up the Emeralds winning the first half division title, but their pitching went wild in spectacular fashion, so that plan is out as well. How about we just dive into the games.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs

Iowa was rained out. Weather permitting, Dexter Fowler and Jorge Soler should begin their rehab assignments today.[adinserter block=”1″]

Double A: Tennessee Smokies

Tennessee had the day off.

High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Winston-Salem 13, Myrtle Beach 7
There were no extra base knocks among the Pelicans’ twelve hits.

  • Daniel Lewis: 1 IP, 1 H, 2 K. His was the only scoreless appearance for Myrtle Beach.
  • Rashad Crawford: 3 for 5
  • David Bote: 2 for 4
  • Yasiel Balaguert: 4 for 4, BB
  • Jeffrey Baez, 1 for 1, BB, SB
  • Andrew Ely: 2 for 5
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs

South Bend had the day off.[adinserter block=”2″]

    Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
    Hillsboro 8, Eugene 2
As a team, the Emeralds walked SEVENTEEN Hillsboro Hops. I really hope that is a record.

  • Bryan Hudson: 4 IP, 4 R (1 ER), 3 H, 6 BB, 2 K.
  • Enrique De Los Rios: 2 IP, 1 R, 0 H, 5 BB
  • Scott Frazier: 2 IP, 1 R, 0 H, 3 BB, 2 K
  • Robert Garcia: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Chris Pieters: 1 for 4, HR
  • Rookie: Arizona Cubs
    Cubs 7, Dodgers 6
The Cubs scored three in the eighth, and it proved just enough.

  • Yapson Gomez: 3.1 IP, 2 R (0 ER), 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K
  • Luis Ayala: 2 for 5, 2B
  • Isaac Paredes: 4 for 5
  • Kevin Zamudio: 1 for 5, 2B
  • Michael Cruz: 1 for 3, 2B, BB
  • Rafael Mejia: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Other Notes

  • In less than two weeks, on August 1 to be precise, you can buy Cubs playoff tickets. South Bend Cubs playoff tickets, that is. The Cubs, by winning the first half, have already guaranteed themselves a slot in the postseason. They will host Game Two (and Game Three if needed) of the best of three first round series against West Michigan. In addition to good baseball, it looks like your ticket will get you a fireworks show and access to some cheap beer. All in all, not a bad deal.[adinserter block=”3″]
  • If you do decide to take in a minor league playoff game, there is a chance you will see Eloy Jimenez in action. If it looks like Myrtle Beach is going to make the playoffs I think the Cubs may go ahead and move Jimenez up to High A at the very end of the season. Otherwise, should the Pelicans fall out of the hunt, I suspect he will stay in South Bend for the playoff experience. We have several cases of the Cubs making very late season shuffles to get key prospects onto postseason teams over the past few years; I doubt they will shift away from that pattern this year.
  • Eugene had two different pitchers allow a run without giving up a hit. I cannot remember ever seeing that happen twice in the same game to the same team before.
  • With a win today, the Emeralds will clinch the first half division title.
