Five Chicago Cubs Among 100 Most Powerful People in MLB

Recently, we learned that our fearless leader – Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein – was considered to be the WORLD’S greatest leader, at least according to Fortune Magazine.

Indeed, Epstein actually found himself two spots ahead of the literal Pope.

In a more recent, slightly similar exercise, USA Today attempted to rank the top 100 most powerful people in baseball, and Epstein, naturally, made the cut.

He wasn’t however, the only member of the Cubs organization on the list. In fact, he wasn’t even the man at the top. Five total Cubs – led by owner Tom Ricketts – were found to be influential and/or powerful enough rank out as one of USA Today’s Top 100 Most Powerful People in Major League Baseball.

At the top of the list – which you can see in full here – you’ll find the commissioner of baseball, Rob Manfred, his right-hand man, Dan Halem (potential future commissioner), and another one of MLB’s inner-circlers, Tony Petitti.

Following the MLB employees, you’ll find Bill DeWitt, the Cardinals’ CEO since 1996, and super-agent Scott Boras rounding out the top five. None of the people associated with the Cubs snuck into the top ten, but you don’t have to go too much further to see their influence:

  • Tom Rickets (15th)
  • Theo Epstein (16th)
  • Kris Bryant (38th)
  • Joe Maddon (58th)
  • David Ross (63rd)
  • Ricketts leads the way for a list of Cubs’ personnel/staff that are considered to be among the game’s most powerful (hello, David Ross – that guy is everywhere!) and is just the second owner on the list (DeWitt – 4th).

Epstein, on the other hand, is actually the first baseball operations executive to make the cut, while Joe Maddon is also the first active manager. Bryant is just the third active player on the list, behind only Bryce Harper (11th), and Mike Trout (34th), while Ross follows a series of former players to make the cut.

Check out the USA Today article for the rest of the list and a brief write-up on why each person made the cut.
