Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 8, Phillies 3 – May 2, 2017

The Cubs put the wood to the Phillies in a bit of recompense for last night’s disaster, homering three times (Kris Bryant, Javy Baez, Kyle Schwarber), and putting the game out of reach by the middle innings. Jon Lester’s outing, like his season so far, was mixed. He grinded (ground?) through five innings, needing over 100 pitches to complete the effort, as he did not have his best command (and was also visibly frustrated with calls he wasn’t getting. But when the opposing pitcher, Jeremy Hellickson, was fouling off pitch after pitch and making Lester work, it was something of an indication that the stuff wasn’t tip top. But Lester DID pick off a runner with a throw – a toss-like throw, but overhand! – to second base to record an out, so it was pretty much a clear win.

Interesting that Carl Edwards Jr. got two innings in relief (looking excellent, as always). It’s something we know the Cubs have groomed him and others for in the past, but it’s not something we’ve seen employed with him all that much.

Offensively, the Cubs had solid nights all over, but there was one obvious one that stood out …
