Well, all of those good feelings from earlier today (getting Kyle Schwarber back, big game against the first-place Brewers, playing at Wrigley Field, finishing the first half strong, closing the gap, etc.) are out the window with that ugly loss. Because, yeesh.
And I’ll tell you something else, I don’t envy Brett for having to write up these Enhanced Box Scores every night. It’s really tough after a loss, especially one that rough, to say anything positive. And given that you probably aren’t looking for too many positives right now, I won’t give them to you.
Let’s keep it real: That was a bad one, friends.
Mike Montgomery got smacked around a lot early and his replacement, Jack Leathersich, did not do anything to stop the bleeding (in fact, he immediately walked two straight batters with the bases loaded for back-to-back runs, which UGHHHH).
After the top of the third inning, before Javy Baez even got his first at-bat, the Cubs had already dug themselves a 9-0 hole. You’re just not going to come back from that one often.
Jason Heyward hit a couple of balls hard, Jon Jay pitched an inning, and Willson Contreras launched his 11th home run of the season (more on his year tomorrow), but there just wasn’t that much to take away from this one. That was a bad loss to the wrong team at the wrong time.
And the 2017 season marches on …
