The Cubs and Tigers played tonight’s game against the much more important backdrop of continued unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin following the police shooting there, and the subsequent protests that came first in the NBA and then in three MLB games that were postponed.
Although the Cubs opted to play tonight, Jason Heyward decided to sit out. He shared this image before the game on Instagram:
As for the game itself, although the Cubs got five solid innings from Jon Lester, a couple key members of the bullpen and the defense let things get away in the 6th. The Cubs nearly mounted a comeback in the 9th, but a 424-foot blast by Anthony Rizzo with the lead runs on base wound up nothing but a sac fly to bring the Cubs within one. Game over. It’s a series loss against the Tigers.
There’s more to say about this one and the games ahead, but I don’t have much else tonight.
