Although he was dubbed the “heavy favorite” for the Cubs GM gig, outgoing Diamondbacks Assistant GM Jared Porter is actually headed to the Mets.
Jared Porter and the Mets are in agreement and he will be the new Mets GM. Only minor details to be worked out.

Porter, briefly the Cubs Director of Pro Scouting a few years ago, had experience with Jed Hoyer back with the Red Sox, and is highly regarded as an up-and-comer. Most are going to say that the Mets got themselves a good one.
What we can’t know at this point is whether Porter chose the Mets over the Cubs, whether the Mets made him an offer he couldn’t refuse, or whether he was even seriously in the running for the Cubs gig in the first place. We’ve done a lot of extrapolating on that front, though Hoyer has indicated he really wants a voice from outside the Cubs organization – maybe he also means he wants someone from outside the Epstein Executive Tree.
Stay tuned. Hoyer suggested this week that he might have a timeline update next week.
