After last night’s extra-inning loss at Yankee Stadium, the Cubs are now 2-5 in extra innings and 6-14 in one-run games. In other words, they’ve been good enough to stay in a LOT of games this season, but just not good enough to win them consistently. If you’re feeling the good vibes of the weekend, you might look at that as a positive.
Here’s the lineup for Game 2 against lefty Jordan Montgomery and the New York Yankees.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
1. Christopher Morel, CF
2. Willson Contreras, DH
3. Patrick Wisdom, 3B
4. Frank Schwindel, 1B
5. Ian Happ, LF
6. Yan Gomes, C
7. Nico Hoerner, SS
8. Andrelton Simmons, 2B
9. Jason Heyward, RF
SP: Matt Swarmer, RF
Even though there’s a lefty on the mound, one who’s very good against left-handed pitching, Jason Heyward is the starter in right field, because the Cubs no longer have Clint Frazier (but we’re not going to dwell on that anymore than we already have today).
More importantly, Yan Gomes is returning to his catching duties behind the plate, which allows Willson Contreras to take over the DH role, batting second behind Christopher Morel. Meanwhile, Patrick Wisdom moves up against the lefty, as he does, and Nico Hoerner and Andrelton Simmons are your double-play duo up the middle.
As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ post closer to game time (6:15 CT on FOX).
